America is STILL SUFFERING from the sh** that came about because of the number of people who were so easily fooled by those bastards. I am not alone, or special - there were PLENTY of us who were NEVER FOOLED.

3. He also
had nothing but praise for bush, cheney, rumsfeld and the rest of the neo-cons until he decided that the country owed him the presidency. The guy is opportunist that will do or say anything if he thinks it will get him into the oval office. He has absolutely no Democratic credentials and no relevant experience.

It amazes me that so many here see him as a valid candidate.

6. found this quote...
When former cheerleaders of war, former warmongers and former war-supporting journalists suddenly become anti-war, it makes me suspicious. It often seems that, for such people, being anti-war is little more than a cynical posture, a way of scoring points by joining the critique of an unpopular war. They appear to be serving themselves, rather than serving the potential victims of war.

9. I, for one, think that Mr. O'Neill was wrong.
I worked for the Defense Contracting Industry from 1982 until 1991. I voted for Reagan, and I voted for Bush Sr. I was a young accountant/accounting-clerk that didn't understand much about the World. Then I went into mental health and social work; the experiences in those professions really opened my eyes to so much.

I travelled progressively left, becoming increasingly anti-war, and voted for Clinton as my first Democratic vote. I've been a very dedicated progressive for many years now.

Of course, I'm not a politician, but I've volunteered for many!

"If we go in (to Iraq) unilaterally, or without the full weight of international organizations
behind us, if we go in with a very sparse number of allies, if we go in without an effective
information operation ...we're liable to supercharge recruiting for al-Qaida"

Gen. Wesley Clark, former NATO Supreme Commander
http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2002-09-09-oplede_x.htm

and, what's more, we will win this culture war overwhelmingly only
by recruiting a hell of a lot of republicans, exactly like
General Clark, and James Webb, for that matter.
Taking the attitude that we won't support someone
who's not "pure" enough, is what got us
a Nader campaign, and put Bush into office in the
first place, so please review that noise.

What I was questioning was the idea that one could not change one's opinion about the wisdom of war, or one's basic political and philosophical leanings, in a sincere, fairly quick manner. I did (or maybe I never really did agree with conservative philosophies).

Happy Holidays!

34. Clark didnt suddenly become antiwar ....
Edited on Mon Dec-25-06 04:27 PM by Trajan
He was against Iraq from the start ....

You are intentionally giving him short shrift regarding his stance and using non sequitur fallacy to promote your views ... I trust Clark to promote democratic values MORE strongly, and to promote REASONABLE foreign policy MORE intently, than many of the pink tutu's in the party ....

People change, and Clark changed long before the Iraq war: A war he NEVER supported ...

Furthermore: The use of the term 'Antiwar' is prone to intentional misuse, as even the most progressive liberals would NOT be antiwar if they were lived in a country that was invaded .... and we can certainly point to instances, like Germany in Europe in the 30's and 40's, where Liberals would promote war against such a vicious regime ...

I am pacificist, and I am certainly against OFFENSIVE war .. but Im not an idiot: I wont tolerate a dangerous situation and do nothing ...

REAL Defense, not offense, is a worthy goal, when necessary ...

Iraq was not necessary .... Iran is not either ....

Clark agrees with those viewpoints, and I agree with him ....

Antiwar ? ... absolutely : Unless someone puts a hot poker up my ass, then watch the fuck out ....

28. Your post pissed me off so much
that I reacted badly.

I should have just ignored you, because you didn't even deserve a reply.

Yeah, I have stories. About not being able to rent an apartment, because we were war mongers. About every Marine I knew owning a wig, because if you went to the bars in Georgetown, with a shaved head, chances are you'd get beat up...so they traveled in groups, & pretended they weren't in the military. And yeah, military people stopped wearing their uniforms off base, because they were targets of hate. As a matter of fact, the Commanders warned them not to wear their uniforms.

And I could go on.

The parties have changed, the times have changed. & people change.

I support Dems because Republicans are dangerous to our country, our citizens & our freedoms.

But don't for a minute believe there are not some in this party who still despise the military. At the beginning of the Iraq war, there were some ugly discussions here, & Skinner put up a warning not to trash the troops. And I was very thankful for that.

As for you, you're just a provocateur, & I should not have wasted my time.

Edited on Mon Dec-25-06 03:29 PM by Pithy Cherub
with a Hillary avatar. Hillary who won't apologize for enabling a failed exercise in war and is losing support faster than a hot air balloon with a hole in it. Wes Clark has leadership credibility and national security bona fides that the insecure try to diminish, yet fail. Hillary is losing support amongst all constituencies because she is out of step politically again and she started her political career as a Goldwater girl and now embraced the Bush conservative debacle fully as a so-called Democrat. Wes is a true national treasure and a Democrat. Reagan Democrats were a huge part of Bill Clinton's win, its good to know you don't want their votes for Hillary either. As a Democrat who votes, Hillary is in no fear of getting mine. Wes Clark would without a doubt! I want to be proud of the REAL Democrat I vote for:patriot:

Wes Clark did not embrace such a stupid use of America's blood and treasure. He was on the side of the Angels. In the spirit of the Season, May the Gift of Useful Wisdom arrive for you by next Christmas. The inability to post in a substantial fashion, yet cast aspersions with maliciousness of aforethought speaks well to the candidate you have selected to promote.

Content of their character is seen by what people choose to post. Seems this post was not wise in any guise and hope that wisdom shows up sooner rather than later.

It takes a fair amount of chutzpah to start threads that:

1) Question black support for the only likely black potential candidate apparently because he is insufficiently black.

2) State that the potential candidate (other than Kuchinich) who has spoken out the strongest for a date to withdrawal and who called sending more troops "dead wrong" is in favor of Bush's surge.

3) To question whether someone who has now been a high profile Democratic advocate for the past 3 years is sufficiently Democratic. (It was fair to ask in 2004, as the declartion was pretty recent, but it is completely unfair now.) Also, Hillary 4 years earlier was publicly an advocate for Goldwater.

The OP has a Hillary icon, so I wonder whether that is to attack her as well - I wouldn't think she would approve of any of these.

Coleen Rowley voted for George W. Bush and yet she was a liberal "saint" this election.

I don't, can't, and won't hold that against Clark as he has genuinely become a Democrat, I believe.

That being said, it's a bit lame if he said "probably" because no one can forget who they voted for in a presidential election.

52. I believe that I've read before
that during that period of his life, he was not particularly political, and was often preoccupied with other things, therefore not always bothering to vote. If that were the case, I could imagine that he might not remember whether or not he voted in a particular election, especially one so long ago. He probably does know that if he did manage to cast a vote, it would have been for Nixon.

he couldn't remember which candidate he voted for which would have been a bit ridiculous. But that makes sense, it's possible it happened as you stated.

It'll be interesting to see how he does. I wouldn't be disappointed with him, though I'm an Edwards guy. If Gore stays out of it, the nominee will be one of three: Edwards, Clark, or Hillary (in order of likelihood according to MHO).

A Hillary or Clark ticket will include the other: Clinton/Clark or Clark/Clinton.

45. Well, his testimony before the Congress
persuaded several Democrats not to vote for the resolution, and infuriated Richard Perle at the time. I will take that as more valid than one out of context quote taken from a "gotcha" style interview from the NYT at the start of his last presidential campaign.

Didn't Hillary "definitely, absolutely and without question" vote for the IWR?

Here, let's throw some of these on your flamewar, in keeping with the season.

He did say don't give Bush a blank check to go to war, which is what the IWR was.

I will not discredit him because he voted for Repubs.

with Joe Lieberman i can understand why her supporters love starting these type of threads against possible opponents. most other supporters of candidates put up stuff in support of whoever their candidate is or what they are doing.

44. He was in the republican party back then
I feel that the reason for his changing over to the Democratic Party is on account of George W. Bush.
Lots of people voted for Ronald Reagan, lots of them were Democrats, I however, wasn't one of them.

47. He was never a member of the Republican party.
He was always registered Independent, but it is true that he used to mostly vote for Republicans. It's unlikely that W changed him on this though, as he's been voting Dem in presidential elections since 1992. It's more likely that the father finally soured him on the Repubs.

At any rate, he's been voting with the Dems for the last decade and a half. I'll take a progressive Dem who used to vote Republican, whether it be Wes Clark, or Jim Webb, over a pure pedigreed Dem who takes Republican type positions, like Joe Lieberman.

53. Clark has worked a helluva lot harder in
getting Dem's elected in 2004 and 2006 than most other Democrats--especially a lot more than most of the Washington pundit-cocktail party favorites. If he isn't a loyal Dem he sure put on a good 7 day/week show at rallies all over the country this past fall. Questioning his Democratic loyalty is so ridiculous it isn't even a remotely effective anti-Clark smear. Go back to the drawing board.

Give me a friggin' break.

He's working for Democrats now. I don't care who he voted for in the 80's.

Here's what I want to know: did he join the RW smear against Kerry at the end of October (like Hillary did), or did he stand up for the truth, or just not have anything to say? (Clark followers, feel free to chime in with links. I actually missed whether he said anything, at the time, and I'd like to know.)

61. Wes Clark wrote this:
snip> ….”The only hope for a national change of course is a Congress far more willing to play it's constitutionally required role of counter balance to a misguided executive. If citizens allow this great debate to be derailed by a momentary fracas over a mistake in a speech (by a man who has actually served in combat and does support the troops), we will have tragically missed a rare opportunity.

John Kerry made a mistake trying to joke about "getting stuck in Iraq." But this election isn't about John Kerry; he isn't running. But, for a crazy day or two, his gaffe has provided a powerful distraction to an election shaping up to be a referendum on the President's national security policy, and his mission in Iraq, in particular. We can not allow the most powerful country in the world to get sidetracked when American lives and the future of our leadership in the world is at stake. “

snip>…. In such a forbidding public dialogue, is it any wonder that John Kerry's blunder is being used to distract us? But how frightening and sad for America if we let this continue. How much easier to attack personalities and resurrect stereotypes than to deal with the grim realities of the Administration's national security predicament!

63. Thank you, that's what I was looking for.
I also found that he appropriately refused to discuss it before he had seen the full clip, but Fox News misreported that, of course, making it sound like he was dissing Kerry. (Like we should be surprised at that, huh.)

I'll give the HuffPo piece a B. Some candidates did much better, for example Casey:

"John Kerry is not only a great leader for the Democratic party and a great U.S. senator, but he's a patriot," Casey said after a morning political rally in Allentown. "He said he botched a joke and I think that is the beginning and the end of it. He was talking about the president and I think he has every right to criticize this president."

Joe Sestak also made a great comment, but I don't have it handy. (Those of us in PA-7 had a stand-up ticket this year!)

But Clark's piece wasn't bad and focused on changing the discussion back to real issues. The only thing he didn't do was make a strong positive statement about Kerry - "a man who has actually served in combat and does support the troops" is not particularly emotive, when he could have brought up Kerry's long record of support. OTOH, even saying that about Kerry, would have undermined the point of his post, that it shouldn't be about Kerry. So I understand why he didn't.

Next to Hillary, for a potential 2008 opponent, Clark's statement is very good. She was just awful.

60. Nope - that was John Edwards who said that.
Edited on Mon Dec-25-06 10:25 PM by Clark2008
I don't recall Clark saying one way or the other whether he voted for Nixon. Clark has admitted voting for Reagan. Hasn't said squat about voting for Bush 1, so we don't know. But did say he voted Clinton, Clinton, Gore, Kerry.

It was John Edwards who said he "probably" voted for Nixon.

Thanks to Frenchie Cat for the evidence published below"

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=2996680#2997932

First published at this link which is no longer available.... http://www.newsobserver.com/politics/politicians/edward...
but I found it here: http://www.eurolegal.org/greendogdem/gdd0704/20040708gd...

The Edwardses were solidly middle class. For most of the time in Robbins, they lived on leafy Frye Street. Their neighbors included an insurance agent, a teacher, a lawyer and a truck driver. An optometrist now lives in the house where Edwards spent the longest period of his childhood.

His father eventually left Milliken, frustrated that he could not advance further in the company because he had not attended college. He set up his own consulting firm advising textile companies.

His mother held a series of jobs, including starting a small roadside antiques store where she bought furniture, refinished it and sold it to help put her son through college. She worked for the county board of elections. She took her last job, as a rural letter carrier in West End, to provide her family with health insurance.

The couple reared three children. Kathy now lives in Columbia, Md., where she is the mother of two and works for a researcher at the University of Maryland. The youngest, Blake, lives in Fuquay-Varina. He is an electrician who travels around the country working construction jobs.

snip
His parents were lifelong Republicans, in part because of the corporate culture of the company headed by Roger Milliken, a major GOP donor who encouraged his executives and managers to become Republicans.

"John and I used to debate the Nixon-McGovern election," said Garner, his NCSU roommate. "I kind of went in the direction of protesting the war. John was more firmly seated in supporting our government. Part of that was the influence of his father."

Garner remembers that Edwards was undecided about whether to vote in 1972 for President Richard Nixon or whether to vote for the Democratic challenger, Sen. George McGovern.

Edwards says he does not remember how he voted. But he says he might have first registered as an independent. He says he thinks he changed his registration to Democrat by 1976.

83. Reading this, my conclusions are:
Edited on Tue Dec-26-06 09:52 AM by karynnj
That in 1972 on a college campus, Edwards was for the first time in an environment where he was seeing a point of view different than the Republican 1950s "government knows best" mentality. I assume that NCSU was less anti-war than many other colleges, but I seriously doubt that there were many colleges without a significant anti-war contingent. (Indiana University in 1970 or 1971 had a student vote on the issue - and the "US out of Asia" sentiment was around 95%)

His roommate clams that he (the roommate) was "in the direction of protesting the war". This was not an election where people thought the candidates were similar. It was a choice. This was John Edwards' first vote for President (based on his age). I remember distinctly actually voting - in both the primary in Bloomington, Ind and the general election in NJ - for McGovern. (I remember who I voted for in subsequent years - but do not have the crystal clear visual memory of going into a building to vote that I have with the first vote. )

I do not find it believable that he "forgot" who he voted for. I suspect that he is part of the demographic that accounted for polls taken in 1973 and 1974 showing a higher proportion of people voting for McGovern than really did. The liklihood is that he - as many Democrats did - voted for Nixon and likely wishes he didn't. I would be impressed if he simply said that. That said who he (or Clark) voted for 34 years ago is irrelevant. This was a VERY long time ago and people do change. That vote (sad for me as one who canvassed in a red county for McGovern) was a landslide. I suspect there were more "Don't blame me, I voted for McGovern buttons" than McGovern voters.

75. So what if he did?
People's politics change over time. Ronald Reagan received almost 60% of the vote in '84. In '88, Bush Sr. received almost 55%.

Of all the attacks of candidates I've seen, this has got to be the most stupid and irrelevant.

Who cares who he voted for almost twenty years ago?

81. In Clark's defense, people actually do change political opinions over time
Just in this past election cycle, I know a few people who have switched from Republican to Democrat and say they will never go back again.

McGovern was not a strong candidate. Nor was Dukakis. So voting for Nixon and Bush 1 (who seem like leaders compared to Bush Jr) is somewhat understandable given the facts over time. And even if Clark was a Republican during that time, it would make some sense due to his military background.

I personally would not have voted for either Nixon or Bush, but I can understand someone making a transformation politically.
