Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 09:54 PM by partylessinOhio
Just announced on Fox - Greta VS.

Edit to ADD:

Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas Dies at 74
Monday, June 04, 2007

WASHINGTON — Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas, a three-term conservative Republican who stayed clear of the Washington limelight and political catfights, died Monday. He was 74.

The senator's family issued a statement saying he died Monday evening at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. He had been receiving chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia.

Just before the 2006 election, Thomas was hospitalized with pneumonia and had to cancel his last campaign stops. He nonetheless won with 70 percent of the vote, monitoring the election from his hospital bed.

Two days after the election, Thomas announced that he had just been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, will appoint a successor from one of three finalists chosen by the state Republican party.

1. Oh that's sad...
I wouldn't wish leukemia on anyone.

And, since people will surely ask -

Wyoming requires Central Committee of the party of the incumbent to offer three names to the Governor for replacement, so his successor will be a Republican.

13. This is very honorable procedure
instead of playing the game that a governor of the opposite party appoints someone from his/her party and upset the balance in DC.

5. My condolences to his family. I knew when I read the announcement
today that he wasn't responding well to some new treatment and his wife and daughter were with him, it sounded very very serious.

7. I'm sorry to hear that
My condolences to his family.

Out of idle curiousity, who was the last senator to die in office? Paul Wellstone, right?

15. Is it wrong to want to know if he's a Democrat or a Republican in the headline?
But then, if it had been a Democrat, the Fox "news" headline would have been

"Democratic Senator from Wyoming Dies in office,"

so I should have guessed.

19. If it had been a democratic senator, the headline would have read
"Democratic senator from Wyoming dies as hell freezes over," considering that Wyoming hasn't had a democratic senator since the seventies :(

But perhaps when they elect Thomas's permanent replacement in '08, they'll elect a democrat again :)

20. Wouldn't it have been "Democrat Senator" ?
They don't like to use "Democratic" for some reason.
