GOP is Doing to Peace Now What They Did to Health Care in the 90s: All to Attack the Dems

I will keep this short and sweet. I realized this while reading one of Bush Water Boy, David Broder's forgettable essay's in which he said that it would not be the Congressional Democrats who ended the War in Iraq, it would be Congressional Republicans who would decide when the War in Iraq would end in their own sweet time, when it was politically expedient.

Remember that back in the 1990's the Clintons were elected with a huge public mandate to fix the health care crisis in America. The Republican Party became alarmed that if they allowed the Democrats to actually give Americans access to good, affordable health care, Americans would be grateful to the Democratic Party and they would keep voting for them. So, the Republicans allied themselves with the health insurance industry and used every dirty trick they could come up with the thwart the will of the people in order to make the Democrats look weak and ineffectual.

We are seeing the same thing once again. Congressional Republicans and Bush-Cheney have made up their minds that when 2008 gets here, the public will believe that Congressional Democrats have been unable or unwilling to do anything to end the War in Iraq. As the 2008 elections near, Congressional Republicans will step forward to save the day. They will claim credit for some minor troop reductions that the GOP presidential candidates will embrace along with the "peace candidate" mantle.

In other words, Republicans are willing to kill more soldiers now just to make Democrats look bad. Because if they allowed the current Congress to follow the will of the American people and start bringing the troops home, then people would say "The Democrats respond to the will of the American people, we should keep voting for them."

So, it isn't all the fault of the Democratic leadership. Some of the blame rests on the opposition which is using the war for political gain.

In your heart, you know which party wants to give the voters what they want, and which party wants the voters to believe that there is no use even bothering to go to the polls, because the will of the voters can not make any difference anyway.
