California meatpacker United Food Group expands recall of fresh and frozen beef on potential E. coli threat.
June 10 2007: 2:13 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Southern California meatpacker United Food Group LLC expanded a recall to include 5.7 million pounds of fresh and frozen beef that may be contaminated with the potentially deadly E. coli bacteria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Saturday.

Fourteen people in six Western states have fallen ill after eating the beef but all have recovered, the department said.

The beef was butchered and shipped in April, and is no longer on store shelves.

"However the products could be in consumers' freezers and it is important that consumers look for and return these products if they find them," the department said in a statement on its Web site.

1. More deregulation needed people? After all you can count on businesses to police
themselves, just ask any Reagan supporter or GW supporter or nearby neo con.

2. No Doubt Grocers HATE Wussy-Pants Regulations!
I'm sure that chest-thumping, he-man "free market" ideologues will tell us that retail grocers and wholesalers are absolutely thrilled with the lack of pesky federal and state food inspectors, no matter what their accountants and book-keepers tell them about food recalls do to their bottom lines.

4. Sometimes when the media says there's an e.coli threat in
beef, I wonder if it's mad cow.
