I just got back from a John and Elizabeth Edwards event. They were great.
An older gentleman, hunched over, with grey hair and a booming voice told John that we needed to develope a cartoff bomb. We need to strike preemptively! We need to use the cartoff bomb and bomb everybody.
John looked really puzzled but listened politely, waiting for the old man to finish. At one point he even turned to Elizabeth to see if she understood what the gentleman was trying to say. The crowd was starting to get uncomfortable as the old man continued ranting. Finally John said to him, I'm sorry, I don't understand what a cartoff bomb is." The man said cartoff was Latin for love. The relief on everyones face was priceless.
At the end of the night, lots of people crowded around the Edwards'. Suddenly a cute little blonde girl came running through the crowd. She grabbed John's hand and started tugging, "Comeon Daddy let's go" and started dragging him out. He was trying to talk to a few more people, but she kept saying "Let's go, Daddy". He let her drag him out, while Elizabeth was still stuck in the crowd.
It was such a normal parent, child thing, it was heartwarming.
I think this is the word th gentleman was saying, "Caritas: This noun never appears in an erotic sense; it connotes dearness, regard, or esteem."
