Are we ready for Freddy?
Fred Thompson is leading the pack of repugs, and he hasn't even entered the race yet. Most of our campaigns are geared to defeat the current office-holder, who isn't running in'08.

We need to be ready to beat Thompson and his eventual running mate. By the way, I can remember back in 2000 when Bush was leading in the polls before he entered the race.

<snip>

While Thompson’s one-point edge is statistically insignificant, it is the first time all year that anybody but Giuliani has been on top in Rasmussen Reports polling. A week ago, Thompson and Giuliani were tied at 24%.

It remains an open question as to how Thompson will hold up once he actually enters the campaign and has to compete directly with other candidates.

1. Thompson is a big fat nothing.
But his actor's ego is soooo big that he thinks he's Schwarzenegger.

And he isn't clean. There were some hearings he was conducting that he shut down as soon as they turned up corrupt Republicans instead of Democrats. He's a dirty bird.

2. Yes, we should pay close attention to Freddy, but it's also true
that as long as he hasn't declared, he's really not been under any scrutinity by the Press or his opposition. Lots of people look GREAT from across the street, but surprise you when they come over and talk to you. I think that's the deal with the Pubs right now. They don't like the 10 declared candidates and somebody said "Hey, how about Fred?" They're all hoping HE will be so much better than the current crop.

Yesterday I heard some talking head saying Fred wants to run a campaign from his office, and campaign only on TV and the internet. That same talking head said "That's not the way you win in States like Iowa and New Hampshire. Those folks are used to having a candidate visit their house 3+ times before they'll even consider voting for them. It's almosst to the point if a potential voter wants you to mow their lawn, the candidate says OK where's the mower."

Lots has been posted about Freddy being lazy. That "campaigning from his office" appears to support that. Let's hope so! That could be the Dem dream Pub candidate!

6. I see your point, but he isn't exactly a political unknown.
I think we can beat him, but he is definitely taking advantage of free publicity right now.

7. Politically, he IS an unknown. WE know his name at least, and
many of us remember him in the Senate, but I'll bet that the majority of voters only know him as the DA on L&O!

All the people on DU & FR really are the politically active MINORITY in the US. You can't believe how many people never heard of any of the candidates on either side except Clinton, Guiliani and McCain. Hell, I've had people ask me who is Biden or Kucinich and THEY ran for Prez in the past!

Every time I hear "Who the heck is that?" i realize AGAIN that WE are the minority ass far as politics goes!

3. Gilmore's new line is hilarious
"I was an elected District Attorney, I didn't just play one on TV" Wonder if Guilliani will steal it.

5. He is saving money
by waiting til later to enter the race. His undeclared candidacy is getting a lot of press and he doesn't have to pay for it.

Old Deputy Dawg is rolling right along. He even talks like the Deputy.

8. I hope he gets the nomination -- he'll be the easiest one to squish
Half-Dead Fred is fraught with political problems, personal problems (the much younger wife),
health problems (cancer survivor coupled with the fact he's 65+), and more personal problems
(a past relationship about to blow up on him news-wise). And think of all those great sound
bytes from Wiseguy's white supremist arc. That whole "real-or-fantasy" thing with actors cuts
two ways, especially when you're dealing with the less-than-sophisticated GOP "base".

9. You don't see the GOP base rallying around this prick, do you.
I can see it happening. It will be a comptetive race with him.

10. I don't think you can underestimate name/face recognition factor
not to mention the shallowness of many voters.

"Hey, I like that guy on Law and Order..."

11. Nope, no it won't. As I've said before around here Freddie has a lot of secrets
That's the primary reason he's waiting so long to officially enter. I'd imagine
there's a lot of running around Hollywood trying to shut up various people. lol
