Poll question: Your #1 TOP reason for voting for ANY Democrat over ANY Republican
If you had to choose one issue... (I know there are many others, as well!)

1. Any of the above, all of the above
Basically I have never seen a repuke do anything for me-lots of things they wanted to do TO me.

10. Yes, that is exactly what it is about.
The constitution has to be secured before I can worry about any of the other issues.

13. But some of those issues go to securing the Constitution...
Judicial appts, sane foreign policy, church/state, upholding rights, etc. (Also - verifiable voting!)

3. I'm being a little selfish
I voted Iraq War/Foreign Policy on the grounds that my husband has been to Iraq once and I would like it that he not go back. That is my main focus right now.

27. I voted that way, too, but for a different reason
The Democrats are far and away better on war and foreign policy yet it's been what they lose on. I hope we don't blow it now when the country is finally awake.

because that is the issue that Democrats are most strongly united on. You can't trust a lot of them to vote against the war, for accountability, for social justice or health care.

7. The way they handled Hurricane Katrina
The Republicans were prepared to make an American city a no-mans land because it wasn't "their type of people".

If you are thinking of putting them back in Remeber New Orleans.

15. Other - Partisanship
Hate to admit it, but that's it in a nutshell. For example, here in my DuPage County IL-13 District we have a Con Rep. On campaign paper, she's "moderate". On voting, she's party line. In this county, a Democrat running for U.S. Representative could have the same positions and they would still lose simply because of the (D) behind their name.

But we ARE making progress and I look forward to when we have our first female governor (and she's a Democrat! :woohoo: ). The Herald had a good opinion piece about how Democrats are making progress in DuPage. As the writer puts it: "The most popular candidates on Tuesday in DuPage, where the GOP has been around since the good Lord took his seventh day to rest, were both Democrats."

Here's a piece: http://www.dailyherald.com/opinion/zimmerman.asp?id=249261

16. Not "every Democrat" is for Reproductive Freedom, Seperation of Church & State,
or any of those things -- even Torture -- anymore, Sparkly. I hate to disagree with your poll, but it assumes that the Democrats all want what we want -- across the board -- and are willing to fight for it in our names. They no longer are, and we all know it.

The problem is we've voted for the (D) for so many elections now without regard for their policies thinking somehow they were "better" (and I am guilty of that, so I share culpability) that we are now reaping what we have sown. We have elected, by and large, a big enough number of DINOs that the genuine Democrats are forced either into silence or complicity. We have a "leadership" that -- apart from Dr. Dean -- has been swallowed alive by the DLC. We get the laws THEY will vote for and still get re-elected. We get the laws the lobbies who pay their campaign huge $$$ dictate to them. They no longer support us, they just try and make it look like they do, and when we catch them at their game, they just claim they raised the bar too high in the first place, and got our hopes up.

I am disgusted with the governemnt -- the ENTIRE government (every branch) -- at the moment, and I sincerely do not know where to go from here, but I do know one thing, NO CANDIDATE gets my vote ever again, simply because of the (D) after his/her name. No way, no how. Never again. Only those who stand for what I stand for will get my vote. Otherwise, the lobby they support over me, can get them re-elected without me, and when enough Republicans (the ones with the (R)s after their names) win, then the REAL Democrats will be empowered to step forth, and lead this Party back to victory. Until that happens, no matter which Party wins election, our government will be controlled by Republicans -- even Democratic ones.

38. We disagree, TC.
We agree it's about issues -- hence the poll lists issues. In the national election at the least, there are clear differences between the parties. Any Democrat running beats any Republican running, in my book.

Yes, they share traits in common because they're the same animal: Politicians.

I don't know of any state or local races in which the Republican better reflects our views than the Democrat, either. (Comparisons between states is another story.)

Most importantly, I think the old dream that relinquishing power to Republicans will eventually lead to a better, stronger Democratic party is both unrealistic and dangerous.

17. Unfortunately, None of the Above.
Corporate (DLC, Third Way, Blue Dogs) Democrats vote like moderate republicans. Therefore, I would love to vote a straight Democratic ticket, but in the present political atmosphere, one also must make a distinction between: 1) The Corporations First; or 2) The Constituents (People's General Welfare) First Democrats.

When faced with voting for a DLC Democrat or "writing in" another Democratic Candidate, I will choose the latter.

24. The way the selection process is set up now,
we will never get another true Liberal through the approval hearings, anyway. The best we can hope for is a moderate, so those who vote for anyone with a (D) after their names are safe here.

23. Newsflash: A number Congressional Representatives are Pro-Life Including Senator Harry Reid.
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 09:00 AM by ShortnFiery
:wow:

Don't kid yourselves - we have a significant number of Pro-Life Democrats in our Congress.

http://www.worldmag.com/articles/12590

Senator Reid offers something special for the minority spot, because he is one of the first powerful Democrats in a long time who is devoutly pro-life:

Voted YES on criminal penalty for harming unborn fetus during other crime. (Mar 2004)
Voted YES on banning partial birth abortions except for maternal life. (Mar 2003)
Voted YES on maintaining ban on Military Base Abortions. (Jun 2000)
Voted YES on banning partial birth abortions. (Oct 1999)
Voted YES on disallowing overseas military abortions. (May 1999)
Rated 29% by NARAL, indicating a pro-life voting record. (Dec 2003)
Expand embryonic stem cell research. (Jun 2004)

39. Economic fairness
Not only are the monarchists just evil parasites, they'll destroy the country. This economy can only survive if a lot of people are making reasonable money, and that's being destroyed by the extreme greed of the few. What made this country the economic monster it is was that our workers made good wages and were able to buy things and pay taxes. Elitists may just sneer that those who are falling behind are simply inferior and deserve to fail, but if they do, it'll take us all down with them.
