3-0 for Hillary!!!

Yepsen: Clinton’s fine showing should help her in Iowa

Score one for Hillary Clinton.

The New York senator turned in the single most impressive performance during a debate among the Democratic presidential candidates Thursday night in Washington, D.C.

Clinton was crisp, cogent and methodical in her answers. She understood better than any of the other candidates the need for terse answers when so many candidates are given so little time in which to answer questions.

It’s more than just a debating skill. American presidents lead the nation through television appearances, and Clinton’s performance Thursday night suggests she can do that. She showed she has mastered the ability to put a lot of information into a few seconds on the tube.

She did that by talking more about solutions instead of yammering about how bad the problems are. Some of her opponents, who’ve had careers in the U.S. Senate or House, didn’t get to the point before their time was up.

Her performance Thursday night was so good it should help her cement her lead in polls of the race nationally. In Iowa, where she’s not been doing as well as she is across the country, it should help her break away from Barack Obama and try to overtake John Edwards.

Obama held his own, but at this stage in the race, he needed something more stellar to show he’s got some depth on issues. (His most memorable moment came when he made it clear he got his HIV test with his wife.)

A big disappointment was John Edwards’ performance. He let himself get lost in the shuffle.

3. She may be cogent
but she will lose the general. Fifty percent of the people won't vote for her. All the repubs have to do is move 2% and she is done.

7. is that what you're hoping for?
All the repubs have to do is move 2% and she is done.

All the Dems have to do is move 2% and she is President.

8. Not everyone votes
She will do just fine in the general, as would Obama, Edwards, Dodd, and probably Richardson.

4. I give her credit, despite the naysayers on DU--
she is about as skilled and polished as they come. She almost never has an "off" day--a consummate professional. I have a lot of hope for her, if she does become the nominee (and my man Obama doesn't)--I think she will chop the Repubs off at the knees in debate.

6. I agree with your assessment
I am worried about what the corporate controlled media (the owners have the real power, not the reporters) will do to her in the general election and therefore have hoped the other candidates would outshine her. However, to my chagrin, she is an excellent debater. She looks like the person most qualified to lead the country IMO. Of course, that includes the Repub candidates, each worse than the other, as well as Bloomberg.

11. actually, she's better protected than others
The problem the media can have attacking her is that she's a known quantity, further criticism is either piling on - which can backfire - or unfairly sharp - which can also backfire.

Political attackers love the "what you don't know about candidate X" line - as in what you don't know is Kerry's medal heroics were faked - lies that supposedly show the "real truth". If Kerry had been a nationally famous and known figure like Hillary for years, that wouldn't have gone anywhere. You're just not going to convince anyone other than the already converted about some "new" truth about HRC, and they've heard the rest a thousand times - people are too used to information about her for good or ill that needs to be taken with a grain (or ton) of salt. People are skeptical about anything said about HRC and any "swift boat" action is going to be an uphill ride in search of credibility.

Which, of course, doesn't mean someone won't try.

9. The pundits have spoken
Now we should believe. Are any of you tired yet of the pundits telling you how you should think?

16. But isn't there a common misperception out there?
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 04:28 PM by Robson
Political columnists, pundits, and reporters do not know anymore than an informed American citizen. They just get the opportunity to put their opinion out there before many more eyeballs. It's the uninformed citizens that should worry us. They are always the targets of manipulation.

12. I was proud of ALL of them
I don't think there was a clear winner in the "debate". It was good seeing all of them on stage. Each of them made good points.

Compare that to the Repugs and their ridiculous one-upping each other on how they could be better theocratic, autocratic oligarchists than the other.
