Biden, Clinton, Edwards, Obama and Richardson to participate in Chicago forum today
Dem hopefuls come courting
5 will state their cases at the annual convention here of trial lawyers, among the party's biggest, most reliable donors

July 15, 2007
LYNN SWEET lsweet@ suntimes.com
WASHINGTON -- Five Democratic presidential candidates will hit Chicago today to pay their respects to trial lawyers, influential beyond their numbers because they are among the party's most reliable and biggest donors.

The candidates will speak at the annual convention of the American Association for Justice, known until last December as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

Long shots not on list
The group, meeting at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, will hear from New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Sen. Barack Obama, former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.), Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).

Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) can't attend because of a scheduling conflict, and it seems the organization did not go out of its way to book long shots Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and former Sen. Mike Gravel (D-Alaska). Over a long lunch, each candidate will have 20 minutes to talk and take questions.

1. In a world of my making, all of our candidates would be on the
podium, each with a fair turn to speak.

As it stands now, the audience will hear several Democrats. My guess is that one of the people they hear -- we don't know which one yet -- will be our next president.

Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Trial lawyers don't ant any anti-corporatist-hippy-dippy-peacenik-quasi-socialist-compassionate-humanist wasting their time. Time is $$$ and $$$ can't buy Kucinich.

Just my opinion, but it's how it looks from where I'm sitting.

6. Is Dennis a member of the Association?
Clinton and Edwards are, and I would presume Obama and Dodd are.

12. That's why he wasn't invited then
And maybe why he's not complaining about the exclusion.

13. His complaint was with collusion for exclusion by 2 candidates not about
private organizations invite lists.

If Obama's Alma mater asks him to speak so what? Dennis meets with various groups daily and all the canadates aren't invited or are and decline or visit at some other time.

I expect Dennis will continue to focus on his superior healthcare plan, his better Iraqi exit plan and his other ideas.

He spoke out because he was asked about it and because ot's wrong for candidates to collude to exclude other candidates at public televised open debates of the candidates.

The supporters of the 2 candidates started out in denial, and moved to attacking Dennis, then Obama because that's the nature of hero worship. You know, protect your hero no matter what.

10. Dodd isn't DLC
He never was, nor has ever been a member. Same for Obama. Biden, Clinton, Edwards, and Richardson all are or were members of the DLC.

8. I *think* Biden is going, which would be good for him.
He needs to go face to face with the blogisphere.
