Edwards in New Orleans
July 16, 2007, 4:09 pm
By Leslie Wayne

Mr. Edwards said the purpose of his New Orleans visit was to “shine a bright light” on poverty and earnestly answered questions about minimum wages, job creation and affordable child care. But the press conference took on a different tone, when one local reporter asked Mr. Edwards his opinion of the travails of Louisiana Republican Senator David Vitter. ~snip~

So what did Mr. Edwards think of this? Without missing a beat, Mr. Edwards smoothly said “I don’t have much to say” and then added “Obviously, it’s a disappointment when a U.S. senator makes a confession like that.”

The same reporter continued on: And what about Representative William Jefferson? Mr. Jefferson, a Louisiana Democrat, has proclaimed his innocence in the face of a 94-page federal indictment detailing 11 bribery schemes and 16 criminal counts, including racketeering and money laundering

“People are innocent until proven guilty and this would apply to the congressman,’’ said Mr. Edwards. “He is entitled to his day in court.” ~snip~
