Richardson: I'll abolish No Child Left Behind law

Richardson: I'll abolish No Child Left Behind law

July 26, 2007

Boone, Ia. – New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson vowed today to abolish the federal government’s “No Child Left Behind” education law if he is elected president.

The law, adopted in 2001, is aimed at improving academic achievement among all students. It includes annual testing to measure progress in reading and math. Critics contend the law has never been supported by adequate federal money and that such a heavy emphasis on testing encourages “teaching to the test.”

“What I believe is key, and what I will do the first day, is get rid of “No Child Left Behind,” “ Richardson told about 100 people in a town hall-style meeting at the Boone County Historical Center.

He said he favors establishing a minimum wage for teachers, adding that teachers are “maligned, underpaid and not treated right.”

He also expressed his support for preschool programs, and for bolstering high school math and science curriculums.

1. Richardson is more and more appealing all the time
I loved what he said about Iraq when I heard him. He said when he is asked how he will bring the troops home he says "on planes".

3. Richardson ain't out of the race yet...
Remember, he's got more experience than the three "front runners" put together!

4. I fully support him on this.
He has some other positions I like, as well.

If he were not DLC, I'd have him on my short list, to be sure. I wonder if he'd respond, were I to communicate with him about that?

Frankly, I heard the msm and many DUers describe him as somehow "weak" in the debates. I didn't think so at all.

Other than being a DLCer, there is another thing that I take strong issue with. If he really WOULD abolish NCLB in his first 100 days, I might be persuaded to overlook that other thing.

7. Richardson has become more appealing to me as well
It's too bad so far he hasn't inspired the support that other candidates have. I hope he becomes part of the new cabinet, maybe Secretary of Education.
