Kenny G, soft jazz genius, endorses Senator Clinton

"Hillary Clinton said she used to cry when she'd listen to my music when Bill was out on the town or whatever. So many memories while she waited for his return. Since I may be getting some good gigs at the Inauguration and have been promised a deal to play a gig with Bill on sax and Celine singing, I have decided it would be good for my career to endorse her for President. It gets my name back in the news and maybe some of the networks will play some of my music and I'll get money for that. It's all good!"

41. The Titanic theme sucks.
Will Jennings wrote the suckwad lyrics. He used to write suckwad lyrics for Steve Winwood.

Some of Celine's stuff is good that is in French. I actually think she has a pretty good voice. Unfortunately, that Titanic song is gross.

56. Hey now, don't pick on Bread like that!
A few of their songs *are* extremely sappy, but they produced a number of catchy, well-crafted pop-rock songs during their time. I'd recommend stuff like "Been Too Long on the Road", "Friends and Lovers", "Down on My Knees", and "Take Comfort", among others, to any doubters.

Besides, it's just wrong, even if you only consider their sappiest soft-rock hits, to put them in the same category as Kenny G!

11. Don't take my word for it...read what Pat Metheny has to say
A classic rant:

Kenny G is not a musician I really had much of an opinion about at all until recently. There was not much about the way he played that interested me one way or the other either live or on records.

<snip>

Not long ago, Kenny G put out a recording where he overdubbed himself on top of a 30+ year old Louis Armstrong record, the track "What a Wonderful World". With this single move, Kenny G became one of the few people on earth I can say that I really can't use at all - as a man, for his incredible arrogance to even consider such a thing, and as a musician, for presuming to share the stage with the single most important figure in our music.

... when Kenny G decided that it was appropriate for him to defile the music of the man who is probably the greatest jazz musician that has ever lived by spewing his lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, fucked up playing all over one of the great Louis's tracks (even one of his lesser ones), he did something that I would not have imagined possible. He, in one move, through his unbelievably pretentious and calloused musical decision to embark on this most cynical of musical paths, shit all over the graves of all the musicians past and present who have risked their lives by going out there on the road for years and years developing their own music inspired by the standards of grace that Louis Armstrong brought to every single note he played over an amazing lifetime as a musician. By disrespecting Louis, his legacy and by default, everyone who has ever tried to do something positive with improvised music and what it can be, Kenny G has created a new low point in modern culture - something that we all should be totally embarrassed about - and afraid of. We ignore this, "let it slide", at our own peril.

...

Since that record came out - in protest, as insignificant as it may be, I encourage everyone to boycott Kenny G recordings, concerts and anything he is associated with. If asked about Kenny G, I will diss him and his music with the same passion that is in evidence in this little essay.

That dude can play...his commentary on Kenny G is spot on.

I love playing my own version of "Sirabhorn" and "Unquity Road" from Pat Metheny's "Bright Size Life", which is my all-time fave record of his...with Jaco on bass...

37. Thank you for posting that quote from Pat Metheny.
And I said Kenny G. was noodling. Pat used the word "noodling" too in his string of derogatory adjectives!!! So we are both brilliant musicians!!

I like "We Live Here", "Secret Story" and don't get tired of them. I like some his old stuff on ECM. I don't like some of his stuff that doesn't seem to have structure and rhythm to it--kinda like snow on the TV.

Heads up: The soundtrack Pat wrote for "A Map of the World", a movie with Sigourney Weaver & David Strathairn (the guy who played Ed Murrow in Clooney's film) in it, that nobody saw, is just gorgeous. And of course "This is Not America", from "The Falcon and the Snowman", is a classic.

Hillary should have picked "This Is Not America" for her theme song!!

40. Pat got the spirit....
Pat converted to the true faith, as I call it, when he went to see Wes Montgomery when he was a kid. Howard Roberts also played in that style.

I think I saw Pat about thirty years ago playing with the Gary Burton Quintet. I'm about the same age as Pat, so I was in college at the time.
