Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards gets the jump today for next week’s remembrances of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. While his rivals in both parties will undoubtedly try to grab headlines with 9/11-related events, the former North Carolina senator and 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee is in Manhattan today giving this round’s first — and possibly most substantive — speech on the topic.
Advance text released by the Edwards camp shows him proposing what amounts to a NATO-like approach to terrorism, with what he would call the Counterterrorism and Intelligence Treaty Organization (CITO). Edwards will say, "New connections between previously separate nations will be forged, creating new possibilities."
Give Edwards credit for being the most specific candidate of either party on many issues, from expanding health insurance to aiding the poor. And as the inevitable parade of White House contenders line up with 9/11 rhetoric, chances are that only Edwards will have come up with a detailed agenda.
