1. Personal acknowledgment that a: mistake, an error of judgment, a transgression, call it what you will, has been committed by us. (for some the word crime is a suitable word)
2. Apologize and commit to doing better in the future.
I'm serious. Most of us in daily life know when we screw up and we are forced to confront and apologize for our mistakes to our spouse, our boss, our co-worker, etc. Most religions have as fundamental tenets the concept of sin, the acknowedgment of sin, the asking of forgiveness for the sin and then redemption.
Well, as far as Iraq goes, we screwed up about as big as it is possible to do. Hundreds of thousands of people are dead. We fought a war of aggression on false pretenses. You know it, I know it, the American people know it, our leaders know it, and the rest of the world knows it.
What else can we possibly do at this point but simply acknowledge the truth to ouselves and the rest of the world? We need the transgressors to step down, and then we need to try to rebuild Iraq and our country and ourselves - on a "peace" footing as opposed to a "war" footing.
