Kucinich: President’s Iraq Report Proves It’s Still About Oil
Washington, Sep 14 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), said the so-called progress report released by President Bush today is an elaborate ruse designed to pave the way for the privatization of Iraq’s oil.
“The Bush Administration has no intention of ending this war,” Kucinich said. “They have given Iraq non-negotiable demands for privatizing their oil.
“The Iraqi legislature is blocking the deal, but the President keeps putting on the pressure. This is wrong, it’s a misuse of power and a violation of international law.
“We have no right to force Iraq to give up their oil and we have no right to set preconditions for Iraq which lead them to giving up control of their oil.
“This so-called ‘progress report’ is an elaborate ruse designed to pave the way for the privatization of Iraq’s oil. The Bush Administration continues to violate international law and Congress has the authority to call them into accounting.
“I said five years ago that this war was about oil and as events unfold it is becoming more and more clear that I was right. The idea of equitable sharing of oil revenues is simply a cover for the Administration’s ‘hydrocarbon act.’
“It’s time for Congress and the media to wake up and understand that our international reputation is being shredded by our conduct in Iraq and our unwillingness to adhere to fundamental principles of international law.”
