Rematch set for 5th District congressional race (Oregon)

SALEM -- The congressional race in Oregon's 5th District is looking like a rematch of the 2006 campaign.

U.S. Rep. Darlene Hooley, D-West Linn, who will seek a seventh term next year, had raised nearly $200,000 in campaign donations as of June 30.

Republican businessman Mike Erickson of Lake Oswego, who spent more than $1 million of his own money opposing her in 2006, is setting up for another try.

The Oregon Republican Party is backing Erickson, which could bring national Republican funds for his campaign even before the primary.

Hooley described the 2006 campaign as the most negative she has faced.

Erickson was backed by an independent campaign by some of the people that produced the divisive "Swift Boat" ads against 2004 Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, questioning aspects of his Vietnam service.
