Amendment II Democrats - "Plan B?"
It's the latter half of September, and there's some bad news on the Presidential primary front for Democrats who value their Second Amendment rights.

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Joe Biden, and Dennis Kucinich have issued previous statements in which they expressed support legislation that would restrict your right to keep and bear arms, including a new ban on semi-automatic firearms. Now it appears that Bill Richardson may be following suit.

But all is not lost. Remember that a real President cannot function without the advice and consent of - that's right, you got it - Congress.

And the mainstream media is slowly dawning to the fact that many pro-RKBA Democrats won seats in the House and Senate last year, making passage of new gun-control legislation by the 110th Congress a bit more difficult than the Brady Campaign has expected.

So if we can't get a Presidential candidate who's sympathetic to our stand on the Second Amendment, there's always our Democratic House and Senate candidates.

Therefore, prepare for "Plan B." Our main focus in 2008 may well be to encourage Congressional candidates to remember the Second Amendment and defend it if and when they are elected in 2008 to serve in the 111th Congress. Amendment II Democrats is already sending questionnaires to Democratic primary candidates asking for their positions on gun legislation so that, when you vote in the primary, you won't have any unexpected surprises. Once we start receiving responses, we will post them on the Amendment II Democrats website and keep all of our MySpace friends abreast of their candidates' views.

In the meantime, fasten your seat belts, everyone. Things are going to get bumpy.

1. happiness is a warm gun
seems the 2nd is the only sacred amendment left. I think that there are much more serious threats to our freedom than someone saying that the average citizen can't purchase a sub-machine gun.

2. I know the Bush administration has left a lot of amendments battered and bruised
But for the past 40 years, a lot of Democrats have, IMHO, lost their way when it comes to the Second Amendment. And that cost us control of Congress for 12 years - just when we needed Democratic oversight of the White House the most.

3. single issue voters
are one of the most disruptive things in American politics.

I have a gun but I do not love it, it is a tool that really has only one purpose, killing.

There are too many guns in the world as it is and fighting any attempt to bring sanity to the situation is in my opinion counter-productive. What good is a gun? Maybe to hunt for food, but the sport of hunting is so expensive that any "free meat" is more than offset by the cost of license and equipment.

When some one wants to make a law concerning guns they are not trying to take your guns away. No one wants to take your guns away unless you are a convicted felon. They want to do something about the epidemic of gun violence in this country. If you don't agree with it suggest something better. But automatically voting no to any gun law no matter what is short sighted.

4. I'm not as single-issue as you might think
My heart was broken when the Military Commissions Act was passed, suspending habeas corpus and legalizing torture. You should have heard my phone call to Brian Lamb on C-SPAN the morning afterwards - the term I used to describe myself was "incandescent with anger."

Health care, not just health insurance, is another big thing with me. I have had to deal with serious illnesses concerning my family, and I think it's shameful that a family could be thrown out on the street because one of them suffered an illness that wasn't their fault in the first place. But it's also shameful to curtail basic scientific research that could have saved that person's life and health just because some snake-handling preacher had a beef with the research protocols.

And then there's guns. You have to triangulate and develop a long-term strategy in order to keep Democrats in power, because the Democrats have so much more to offer Americans than Republicans ever will in terms of opportunity and quality of life. But the Democrats take a lot of risks, many of which pay off for Americans in the long run, but in the meantime, a lot of Americans are going to get worried. Giving them one too many things to worry about can cause them to hand Congress right back to the Republicans all over again.

So that's one reason I accent the Second Amendment angle. Hope that helps explain things.
