I want this to go on the record at DU ~ Biden and Dodd voted NO on the Iran bill
and they were the only 2 candidates in the Senate that voted against the Kyl/Lieberman amendment.

1. And as much as I dislike Joe Biden, I have to give him credit
for this. The rest of 'em, I just don't have a clue as to what makes them vote the way they do. Corporate money is generally the motive. Which is why I am surprised that Joe voted NO. But at least he had the moral clarity to do so.

4. I am getting more in favor of Biden over Hillary, Obama & Edwards
every day. I think he at least has enough of a moral conscience to do the right thing. Like you I was somewhat surprised but he evidently put principle over corporate influence.

Way to go Joe.

5. I have to respond here.
Biden is not the corporate candidate.
Even his contributions from MBNA are not on top.

Look at his contributions to his campaign. He is at the bottom.
He is not going after the corporations for contributions.
He is at every debate, every campaign stump screaming for public financing of elections.

When this quarter's fundraising reports come out - look at them.
Compare him to the others. With the exception of Kucinich and Gravel - his corporate dollars will be the lowest - I can guarantee it.

10. Biden not a cosponsor here...
Kucinich: Iran Counter-Proliferation Act Unintentionally
Undermines Diplomatic Efforts

Here's the Senate bill which currently has 68 cosponsors, including Clinton, Dodd and Obama. Biden is not listed as a cosponsor.
S. 970: Iran Counter-Proliferation Act of 2007

But I do know that Biden has spoken out very loudly that Iran is years away from a nuclear bomb and that we have
ample time to deal with them.

14. Biden not being a cosponsor on this is a good thing IMO, here
is what Kucinich said about the Iran Counter-Proliferation Act bill just passed in the House. Clinton, Dodd and Obama have all signed on as cosponsors to the the Senate bill. Good for Biden on his no vote today and also for currently not cosponsoring S. 970: Iran Counter-Proliferation Act of 2007.

“HR 1400 seeks to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) of Iran as a foreign terrorist organization and place the IRGC on the list of specially designated global terrorists and weapons of mass destruction proliferators. This is an exceptional decree by this Congress. The U.S. has never before asserted the military of another nation to be a terrorist organization. Because the IRGC’s main role is to protect the national security of Iran, it would appear that the United States would be better served by high-level diplomatic talks between nations to address concerns related to the IRGC than by broad condemnation and malign designation.

“HR 1400 singles out the Russia Federation as a country that is ‘assisting the nuclear program of Iran or transferring advanced conventional weapons or missiles to Iran.’ The Bush Administration has unfortunately advanced counter productive policies with respect to arms control. These policies have undermined international treaties meant to limit the spread of nuclear weapons and has permitted arms transfers to undemocratic nations. The United States has recently undermined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) by agreeing to collaborate and share nuclear technologies with India, a nation that has refused to sign the NPT. Additionally, in a 2003 report released by the World Policy Institute, 13 nations received more than $2.7 billion in U.S. conventional arms transfers. The top beneficiaries of these transfers were the less than democratic governments of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan. Why then does this legislation specifically target the Russia Federation for similar actions?

“I am also concerned that the scope of this bill with regard to a prohibition on all imports, that would include even culturally relevant items such as art or rugs, is too broad. I do not believe that barring all imports from Iran is necessary or will produce the end that this bill purports to desire.

“I urge this body to cease with the consistent usage of misdirected statements and misguided legislation, all of which fuel aggression. Instead the United States should engage Iran in high-level diplomatic negotiations immediately. We need to create a new opening to Iran, not proceed with another war based on falsehoods,” Kucinich concluded."

12. I must admit, my respect for both Biden and Dodd went up exponentially ...
Bless Biden and Dodd! :patriot: I'm also deeply saddened that Obama did not vote "no" also since I opened my wallet for him.

Since preventing war with Iran is No. 1 for me with regard to issues: if Biden, Dodd or Kucinich don't snag the Democratic Nomination, I'm going to write-in Kucinich for the GE. :(

Sounding like real Democrats with the votes to match. I like that Biden has an Iraq plan, proposed and ready to go, that he's stuck his name to. I am still doubtful about partition, but at least he's not just using Iraq as a campaign platform.

23. I applaud both of these men for rejecting this insanity - recommended
"I think of war with Iran as the ending of America's present role in the world. Iraq may have been a preview of that, but it's still redeemable if we get out fast. In a war with Iran, we'll get dragged down for 20 or 30 years. The world will condemn us. We will lose our position in the world."

26. How about Biden's Iraq plan PASSING 75-23! That is huge! See below:
This is monumental and not giving the attention it deserves:

A few key facts about the Biden amendment:

* The legislation does not tell Iraqis what to do. It speaks only to what U.S. policy should be.
* Federalism is not a U.S. or foreign imposition on Iraq. Iraq's own constitution calls a "decentralized, federal system" and sets out the powers of the regions (extensive) and those of the central government (limited). The Constitution also says that in case of conflict between regional and national law, regional law prevails.
* Federalism is not partition. In fact, it's probably the only way to prevent partition or, even worse, the total fragmentation of Iraq.
* Federalism will not accelerate sectarian cleansing; it's the only way to stop it. Iraqis are already voting with their feet, as yesterday's article in the New York Times demonstrates. Before the surge, Iraqis were fleeing their homes at a rate of about 40,000 month; now, it's about 100,000 a month. Unless Iraqis come to some kind of agreement on sharing power peacefully, the cleansing will continue.
