Republican bloggers in denial about Christian conservatives third party plans
Edited on Sun Sep-30-07 05:35 PM by antiimperialist
I stopped by some conservative blogs to check the mood following reports by Worldnetdaily, the NY Times blog and Salon.com, that top Christian leaders held a meeting in Salt Lake City in which they pondered forming a third party candidate, if the Republican nominee ends up being pro-abortion Rudy Giuliani.

In Redstate, the mood is denial. They attack the sources, implying that not only the NY Times, but also the Worldnetdaily, are not reliable sources.

Powerlineblog is downplaying the story. This is the top story there as I write this, and the blog attempts to diminish the importance of the Salt Lake City meeting.

I'm loving it.

1. I've actually expected that loony and ex Judge Roy Moore
to heed his call and start the bible party or the Christian party or some such party dedicated to ending the American experiment. I think these loons are just waiting to see how the more secular candidates do in the primaries.

If the triumvirate of Huckabee, Tancredo and Brownback get trounced, look for the party to form very quickly. If Guiliani does well and he doesn't suddenly get religion, same thing.

In any case, this might be the last election the coalition between the extremely rich and the religious extremists holds up. Rank and file pubbies want their party back from the lunatics, and the lunatics want a party that pushes their agenda to the exclusion of everything else.

2. I doubt this thing is going to get off the ground anyway
The RR has picked the worst time to try and put such a stunt together. They're low on funds, have bad morale, and a weakening hold on their followers. I don't see this happening.

3. All we need is a right-wing Nader with a couple of thousand votes
It doesn't take much.
It would be insurance in case the Republican candidate manage to make the elections competitive.
