1968: Student riots threaten Mexico Olympics

More than 25 people have been killed during a vicious gun battle in Mexico City just days before the Olympic Games are due to begin.

Thousands of students had gathered for a meeting organised by the National Strike Council in La Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco to protest against the military occupation of the National Polytechnic Institute.

The protesters, many of whom were women and children, had been planning to march through a working-class suburb of the city, but by early evening military personnel in armoured vehicles had surrounded the square.

The Mexican government say "agitator groups" among the students began shooting at the crowds from buildings, which resulted in a 90-minute gun fight.

The death-toll still remains uncertain. Some say it runs into thousands although it is thought to be between 200 and 300. Eye-witnesses say bodies were removed from the scene throughout the night of 2 October {as part of a cover-up operation} in dustbin lorries.

Oh, BTW, the CIA was involved in this, too. *SIGH*

1. Gun battle? My god even the BBC got this one wrong
there was no gun battle. There cannot be a gun battle when only the Army (and police) had guns...

When all was said and done over a thousand people were missing, and were never seen again

It is becuase of this little party that Echeverria may finally face the music. He, and not the President, gave the orders...

But battle? Nope... the army came in with M-1 Garands and fixed bayonets. It was ugly. I know people who were there. Hell, some of my medic training officers were part of that mess as medics...

3. There was no official statemetn about a shoot out
the students did not have weapons
'
This is rewriting of history

As to the CIA having a hand on this... trust me the Mexican Elites didn't need it.

They wanted to shut the students fast... democracy was scary to the PRI

The next few years were surreal in Mexico, and the kind of things that happened there (and are happening again in the name of the war on drugs), is exactly what is going on here.

4. "The Mexican government say"... from the article ...
Of course it's a lie, but the BBC is reporting "this is what they SAID happened" , not "this is what happened".

I see no real call to fault the BBC for that.

5. What part of rewriting history is missing here
by the by, as I said, I know people who WERE there... and remember the troops clearly with M-1 Garands, and fixed bayonets

The specific units came from the Campo Militar #1
