Bernard Kerik probe: When did Rudy Giuliani know?

Shortly before Bernard Kerik was appointed police commissioner by then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, one of his top aides was made aware that Kerik had defended a contractor being investigated by the city for mob ties, the Daily News has learned.

Kerik's defense of Interstate Industrial Corp. during a meeting with two Giuliani officials at a bar in Tribeca in July 1999 is now at the center of a federal probe.

The investigation is expected to end next month with Kerik likely being charged with bribery, tax fraud and obstruction of justice, according to two sources familiar with the probe.

The News detailed the expected charges in an exclusive report yesterday.

In the spring of 2000, a few months after Kerik, then the city Correction Department commissioner, met at Walker's bar with the Giuliani officials, he was asked to turn over notes about the sitdown to the commissioner of the city Department of Investigation, the sources said.

At the time, the DOI commissioner, Edward Kuriansky, met regularly with Giuliani. Kuriansky, who died last year, was then in charge of cracking down on public corruption. He eventually cleared Kerik of wrongdoing.

Giuliani has said he was not warned of Kerik's ties to Interstate when he appointed Kerik police commissioner on Aug. 19, 2000.

Kerik has since admitted that at the time of the bar sitdown Interstate was secretly paying to renovate his Bronx apartment.

Ex-Department of Investigation chief Edward Kuriansky, at left, met regularly with then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani when the agency was probing Kerik in early 2000.
