A message to the ladies from Joe Biden
http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071019/NEWS/710190345

Today is National Mammography Day
Posted Friday, October 19, 2007
On the eve of today's recognition as National Mammography Day, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., urged women to get the potentially life-saving exams and encouraged families to support efforts for early detection of breast cancer.

The Senate recently passed Biden's resolution marking Oct. 19 as National Mammography Day for a 15th consecutive year.

"We know that thousands of lives can be saved each year with early breast cancer detection," Biden said. "Every year, there is better medicine, better technology and a better shot at curing breast cancer at every stage. National Mammography Day is one small part of making this dream a reality."

To learn more about breast cancer and participating mammography facilities offering discounted mammograms this month, Biden urged Delawareans to contact the American Cancer Society: www.cancer.org or (800) 4-CANCER, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition at www.debreastcancer.org or (302) 778-1102, or the Web site of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month at www.nbcam.com.

The American Cancer Society says about 3 million women are living with breast cancer and about 2.3 million have been diagnosed.

20. If you would have said Barry Manilow, that would be different

Barry Manilow Backs Biden!
Variety recently looked at who the Hollywood power elite support. Who knew glittery power ballad singer Barry Manilow backed Biden? Apparently he’s a fanilow! After the jump, see who’s straddling the fence and hedging their bets

8. As one who was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer
I thank Senator Biden for reminding women everywhere to self-check, get mammograms, take no chances. It's just so...Democratic of him. You don't see Chucklenuts, Dead Eye Dick, Lush Limpballs, O'Lielly Fucker Carlson or even Tweety thinking of anyone but themselves and knocking 12-year old kids and toddlers.

And, yes, I can still laugh at boob jokes although in all honesty dumb ass Bush jokes are funnier...and easier to come up with.

11. Yes, think we caught it in time. After a very rocky summer with
diagnoses, changes in doctors and treatments plans, tests and such I start chemotherapy on Monday "just to be safe." I am still waiting for the results of an Oncotype Dx test that would have given me the likelihood of a recurrence and maybe I could have avoided chemo all together. A test that should have taken 8-10 days is now creeping up on five weeks and still no results. You wouldn't believe all of the excuses I've gotten. Decided to hell with it, take the chemo and move on.

Thanks for asking. Now be sure to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. And don't forget, that while it is rare about 10-12% of breast cancers are found in men so don't overlook anyone (learned that in one of my American Cancer Society booklets).

12. As someone that has just spent the last year + dealing with the medical field
because of a family member - I know those excuses. You have to stay on top of them. I had to be a raving lunatic at times just to get anything done. And in the end I was often told that I made them do their job better. I had to, I was fighting for someone's life...and we won. So keep that in mind. They are there for you.

How long do you have to go through chemo? I wish you the best. Keep me posted on how it's going.

14. Ummmm...I 'ppreciate the thought, but a man telling me what female part...
of my body should be checked? There are plenty of women in power, as well as health organizations that do that on a regular basis.

Maybe if his wife had breast cancer, or there were some other reason for it be a personal thing for him. Otherwise, I don't take my medical cues from men, any more than they should listen to me about when to get their genitalia or prostate gland checked.

17. I got your point
I dont know how many women come out and talk about mens health in public.
If they do, they are most likely either ignored or it wouldnt seem that unusual
in the first place.
On the other hand if you asked a male political candidate if he supported
using public funds to educate women about breast exams and he turned around and
said "whats a breast exam?" you'd be even more bent out of shape.
I dont think breast cancer awareness is a subject for political debate.
In reality its about preventing death.

Now, if your a bit perturbed about the comments in the beginning of this thread,
ok, you got me. I and some of the other men here couldnt help but act like little
boys when someone was talking about female anatomy.
Some times its fun to cut loose and have a laugh, thats all.

18. Sweets, you're overreacting.
You weren't being attacked. Gosh, DU has gotten really awfully touchy with all the flame wars, lately.

I just wondered how many women actually came out and talked about prostate cancer. Would a female pol be ignored if she told males to get checkups for prostate cancer? And in a very nice way? And I wonder if women on DU would start laughing about "Turn your head and cough, dude," if a female pol did try to tell guys to protect their health.

It's not about you. It's about society. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

27. It's just such fakey hype is all. Maybe Hillary should suddenly tomorrow warn men that...
they should all go in for a prostate exam because of the possibility of prostate cancer. Technically, she's correct, of course. But such phony political hype is uncalled for. Men and their doctors don't need a female political candidate who is not personally or professionally involved in a particular disease to suddenly start spouting off warnings to the opposite sex about how they should check their privates.

It's a clear bid by Biden to get female votes.

OTOH...if it turns out that his wife has/had breast cancer, that would give him an excuse.

I wonder what Biden's health care plan is to pay for all the mammagrams he's recommending.

always ranks as one of the highest states with breast cancer. You can read his original floor statement here:

http://biden.senate.gov/newsroom/details.cfm?id=229877&&

I have stood on this floor many, many times over the past 28 years to laud people, programs, and events in Delaware. There is one statistic in my State, however, that I am not fond of repeating, but it is a sad fact that we must, and are, confronting: Delaware has one of the highest breast cancer death rates in the country.

30. Sometimes I think people are so invested
in other candidates, that when they realize how right Joe can be, how dead on and honest he is on issues, they have to try to bash the guy to justify their commitment to "their" candidate. I think secretly, they may want to vote for Joe.

I started getting busy here in February to promote Joe. Things have definitely gotten better since then :)
