Ben Stein Crosses Party Lines To Help Franken

(AP) WASHINGTON Liberal Al Franken is good enough and smart enough to win some of conservative Ben Stein's money -- and doggone it, Stein likes him.

Stein, an actor, writer and economist, has contributed $2,000 to Franken's Minnesota Senate campaign. The two men have known each other for about 30 years.

"I'm struck by what an incredibly capable, hardworking guy he is," Stein told the AP in a telephone interview Thursday. "He's a very smart liberal, he's a thoroughgoing patriot, and I would feel better with him in the Senate."

Franken is one of several Democratic candidates vying to take on Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn. As a former "Saturday Night Live" star, Franken has received scores of contributions from people in the entertainment industry, but the donation from Stein doesn't fit into the GOP's talking points about liberal Hollywood elites bankrolling Franken's campaign.

4. By the way, for the 90% who don't even know who Ben Stein is, it's this guy:
to the Right of Bush, who thinks Dubya is a very funny, funny man:

As far as I know, aside from being the Viseen spokesman, his only screen appearance is as the boring Economics teacher in "Ferris Beuller's Day Off". It may be his only credit as an "Economist", as well:

6. Doncha Remember "Win Ben Stein's Money"?
Or his other recurring role as one of Kevin Arnold's teachers in "The Wonder Years"? Sure, he's not much a presence as he once was, but still, his celebrity is deserving.

10. He is also hosting a reality show called 'The Most Smartest Model'
they have a bunch of models and ask them questions and have them do ridiculous things - my partner watches it (not me, never me... heh, heh)

13. Remember when he was so pissy with Paul Krugman? Said he didn't have worthy credentials
as an economist. Never mind that Krugman's Ph.D is in Economics, while Ben Stein's is an undergraduate degree! Krugman is an Econ professor at Princeton and has taught also at Yale and Harvard. Krugman won the Bates Award a few years back that is given by the American Economist Association for outstanding economist under the age of 40.

Well, I guess a broken clock is right twice a day so I'll swallow my disgust if he is supporting Al. Al Franken will make a superb senator!

8. I think the GOP wants Franken to be the candidate
He is not polling well at all. Minnesotans may see Franken as being another Jessie Ventura.

12. The freepers will crucify Stein. But Stein can take it. He has power...
in the business and friends in the media, I believe. He's a very wealthy, influential man, I believe.

Kudos to Stein for crossing the line. Kudos to Franken for taking the money (some Dems may criticize Franken for that, too).

Hope Franken wins, although I'll miss hearing his political satire. He's such a talent. But a loss to entertainment would be the country's gain of someone who cares deeply and will work hard to do what he thinks is the right thing.

14. What is amazing here.....
is how easily Stein changed his politics when he knows the candidate.

I think a lot of conservatives really don't have a clue as to what liberals and/or Democrats are really like because of years listening to right-wing idiots like Limbaugh define Liberal/Democrats.

17. Very good point.
I've donated to Franken's campaign, and I will again in the future. I've been a big fan of his for a long time and I'd love to have him as one of the folks running our federal government. And I don't even live in Minnesota.

19. What makes you think that Stein changed his politics?
I have numerous friends that have different politics from myself. They are my friends because they are decent, honest people of good heart even if misguided in some areas. If you limit your friends to only people of the same political strips as yourself your world will be very bland.

Regards, Mugu

21. That's my point.
Stein is not supporting a Democrat, he is supporting a friend. Please forgive me if this has become a circular discussion.
