Clinton Book Fatigue? Despite Slow Sales New Bio Joins the Lot

WASHINGTON -- Whether or not "Clinton fatigue" plays any role in complicating Hillary Clinton's bid for the presidency, one thing seems clear: Americans are suffering from Clinton book fatigue.

This week, Random House releases "For Love of Politics" by best-selling biographer Sally Bedell Smith, which covers the Clintons' White House years. The policies on which they collaborated -- including budget-balancing, rewriting welfare, the failed push for universal health care and even foreign policies -- are background noise in a re-telling of the financial and sexual scandals that followed them from Arkansas to Washington.

"For Love of Politics," which The Wall Street Journal obtained in a Washington bookstore ahead of its release, follows two major biographies released this summer. "A Woman in Charge," by Carl Bernstein, has sold about 57,000 of the 275,000 copies Alfred A. Knopf Inc. reportedly printed, according to Nielsen BookScan, which tracks about 75% of the book market. "Her Way," by New York Times reporters Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta, has sold about 19,000 of 175,000 copies that Little, Brown & Co. reportedly printed.

And half those buys were probably by Newsmax looking for giveaways!

1. IMO it's because people don't have $$ for anything other than necessities.
Theater box office receipts are down as well.

I don't think this is a reflection on the candidate.

2. Bill Clinton's latest book didn't sell well, either.

Sales for the former president's "Giving," a handbook for civic activism published by Alfred A. Knopf with an announced first printing of 750,000, have dropped far since its release in early September, when Clinton made numerous media appearances, including interviews with Oprah Winfrey and Larry King.

According to Nielsen BookScan, which tracks about 70 percent of industry sales, "Giving" sold nearly 50,000 copies its first week, but hasn't approached that since. For the week ending Oct. 7, only 9,600 copies sold.

Clinton's previous book was the million-selling memoir "My Life."

Even in Washington, D.C., sales are down. A leading independent store, Politics & Prose, ordered 96 copies of "Giving," but so far has sold just 50.

6. I get my books from the library these days.

And I read magazines and newpapers online.

Necessities, and only necessities these days.

Besides, I don't know how many of you have read Bill's book, but it's not that great, either. I think the idea of "giving" is wonderful, but this is not his best work.

TC

8. Or the authors buying fhem themselves and putting them up for sale.
on all the conservative websites. I saw Ann Coulter's new book for sale for $4.98 a few days after it's publication. No wonder she's a best seller? Plus a little help/push from the media.
