Jindal is first Indian-American governor

AP
Published: October 21, 2007, 09:06

Baton Rouge, Louisiana: US Representative Bobby Jindal, the Oxford-educated son of Indian immigrants, won the Louisiana governor's race, becoming the country's youngest governor and the first non-white to hold the state's post since the 1870s.
.........

"Let's give our homeland, the great state of Louisiana, a fresh start," Jindal said to cheers and applause from a crowd that began chanting his name at his victory party.

..............

Jindal had lost the governor's race four years ago to Governor Kathleen Blanco. He won the a congressional seat in conservative suburban New Orleans a year later but was widely believed to have his eye on the governor's mansion.

Blamed

Blanco opted not to run for re-election after she was widely blamed for the state's slow response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

3. He is worse. Blanco declined to run again to be able to speak more freely about Katrina. (nt)

4. The naivete of that idea takes my breath away
Just warms the cockles of my heart thinking about all that love pouring out of the politically chaste and unselfish Blanco who can now speak truth to power.

Except she was the power that truth needed to be spoken to.

Jindal was SO beatable, too, if we'd had an actual candidate. It's freakin' Louisiana, of all places.

7. I'm not sure what you're implying,
butI hope it's not what it sounds like. The Democratic Party of Louisiana ran an absolutely disgustingly racist campaign against Jindal. I am quite embarassed about it, and you can count on it being bought up in the future if we wind up lecturing Republicans about racism. This was an absolute textbook case of trying to stir up racism to advance our politics.

Your comment sounds like you approve, and think we should have done more of it. I hope I'm wrong on that.

8. No, I agree with you
I should have used clearer wording. My point was that anyone who believes Blanco's cover story for not running is a political child among wolves.

You're right, much ugliness was directed at Jindal. For Louisiana's sake, I hope Jindal actually does what he said he would do - attack widespread corruption.

11. He only loves children before they are born, after they can die
of starvation like they do in India. India is his model for capitalism. He is the most com-passionless governor Louisiana ever elected. But he did prevent many Blacks from voting so he probably stole it. He is compassionless and a fake Christian. The insanely religious in Louisiana deserve Bobby.

5. Does a GOP Guv in LA put Vitter in any peril?
After news broke regarding Larry Craig's footsie with the Minneapolis cop and subsequent guilty plea, he became instant persona non grata among his colleagues, who wanted him gone fast, knowing that Idaho's GOP governor would appoint another Republican in the interim. Louisiana was a bit more problematic for them, since forcing Vitter out would have cost them a seat, courtesy of Blanco.

I'm just wondering if the GOP could possibly stomach 2 sitting poster child hypocrite "Values" Senators going into an election year? If they're ultimately successful in forcing Craig out before his term expires, what's to stop them from targetting Vitter (as part of a promised ethics investigation)?

They'll probably try to turn it around in their favor by proclaiming that the "Big Tent" GOP can easily accomodate illicit sex misdeeds from a diverse array of politicians, be they gay, straight, or even that cross-dresser (aka Rudi Julie Annie)!

14. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose - but LEAVE the country?
Because of an election for Governor of Louisiana?
Let's all grow up and know that things ebb and flow.
Posts like yours makes it sound like you don't much care for America and want to leave. Some of us, want to bring change to the nation. Leave if you must - we'll still be here fighting.
