Hillary Draws Thousands In Fresno

Updated 12:05 p.m.: Thousands of people outside Fresno High School listened and cheered this morning as presidential candidate Hillary Clinton capped a campaign rally with her favorite themes: affordable health care, renewable energy and an end to U.S. fighting in Iraq.

The Clinton campaign claimed 7,500 turned out for the rally along a closed Echo Avenue, which fronts the high school. Fresno police spokesman Jeff Cardinale, however, said the crowd count was between 2,500 and 3,500.

The U.S. senator from New York took the stage, set up on the sidewalk along Echo, at 9:47 a.m. and spoke for 30 minutes.

"Let me ask you: Are you ready for change?" the Democratic candidate said, in a slightly hoarse voice, to cheers from the placard-waving audience.

Clinton, whose brief campaign stop in the Central Valley was expected to move on to San Francisco later today, touched on her centerpiece proposal of broad, affordable health care. But the loudest cheers came from her call to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq and her promise to respect the Constitution -- a slap at some of the anti-terrorism tactics used by the Bush administration.

Just for the record, Fresno County went to Clinton. Twice.

34. In all seriousness...
You are correct about the actual population. But the repukes vastly out number the Dems in the surrounding area and control most of the politcal machine. It's largely rural and is probably the largest concentration of unducumented workers in the country.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if ANY candidate running for President would draw a large crowd, since it's not one of the places many think to stop in.

Cheers...and keep working hard for your favorite. Mine still hasn't declared.

Edwards, on the other hand speaks their language and shares their concerns. Just tellin' like it is.

"Far more than the 229 residents of Columbus, Ky., greeted presidential candidate John Edwards when he made a campaign stop in the Western Kentucky town on the Mississippi River today. "At least 1,500 people showed up," reports Jose antonio Vargas of The Washington Post. "As unlikely as it seems, this event in the heart of rural America was the result of online grass-roots organizing.""

Got there at 5:45 this morning and met up with another Dem friend. There were a lot of people, and since I do live (40 miles south of Fresno) in a red part of CA, it was good to see so many Democrats turn out. There were people of all ages and ethnicities there.

I am not a Hillary fan, but should she get the nom, I will vote for her. I was not totally impressed today, but again...it was about 3,000+ people. I was near the stage.

Am not sure why there's so much dissing of Fresno, (or is this just dissing of HRC? ) The San Joaquin is important to the entire nation in terms of food production, cotton and more. Yes, FReepville is here, and yes, it is quite red here. And, while I would rather live in a more blue area, am personally living in this area just to be near my grandchildren.

I went to see Hillary because it was an historic moment for this often ignored area of CA, in terms of Democratic candidates, especially Democratic presidential hopefuls, coming here. Last time this happened was in 1992 when Bill Clinton came to town.

Democrats came from all over the central valley area today. This is a very big area, mostly rural, and many traveled some good distance to attend today.

Not all there were in total support of Hillary, but all of us there were joined by the one common thread: We believe in our party.

Kudos to those who attended. I was glad and proud to be in the company of so many Democrats.

I support and appreciate all of you for being here and being Democrats.
After reading so many of the negative posts here about this event, it saddens me to read such ugly comments.
