Poll question: Glenn Greenwald's blog proposes solution to Obama problem: whaddya think?
Edited on Wed Oct-24-07 11:43 AM by RandomKoolzip
RE: Obama's association with the gospel homophobes...

Pam Spaulding, writing for Glenn Greenwald, posits a possible way for Obama to get his bacon out of the fire and take a step towards redemption...is this plausible? Is it advisable? Possible? Were he to do this, would it change how you feel about Obama?

If he wants to present leadership and stimulate dialogue on this difficult topic, he wouldn't have to call for McClurkin's withdrawal; a better approach would be for the Illinois senator to actually attend the concerts, and give a short speech at each stop about how homophobia has no place at the concert, in churches or in the hearts of a people who have suffered mightily at the hands of those using religion-based bigotry.

1. Well, I can see how this might be an attractive option for some.
But I think the only way Obama can get out of this is to get rid of McClurkin, period. And get rid of the advisor(s) who suggested this whole idiotic idea.

It was a mistake. A colossal blunder, actually. But fixable.

2. My own vote is for "too little, too late."
I mean, who the hell is doing background checks for Obama? Was he too lazy to research McClurkin and Mary Mary? Obvioulsy, he's not a true homophobe himself - but godDAMN what a fuck-up.

I was an Obama supporter, but now I think it's probably best for him to drop out of the race.

3. This is one of the worst campaign blunders I've seen in some time.
You do NOT piss off one of the Democratic Party's core constituencies (and let's forget the Log Cabin people...the GLBT community pretty much votes solidly Democratic) by doing this. Obama can make speeches in African-American churches...or any church...to prove his faith. But hiring bigots who champion that "ex-gay" crap...it's inexcusible.

4. Well he's already said that
in addition to telling the right wing fundies that their spewers of hate aren't Christians, but the anti-religious don't get that you have to talk to the religiously misguided in order to change their minds.

5. Yep
He goes to these churches, tells them they are wrong to their face, and gets accused of pandering and bigotry.

6. It's very disheartening
I don't think I've ever been more discouraged. Every group in the country politicizes everything, to the point nobody knows the truth about anything anymore. I don't see any way out of this mess, at all. Between the global profiteers, oil and water shortages, and climate change; this country is causing the destruction of the planet and is so politically ignorant that we're arguing over a gospel singer that nobody heard of a week ago. There are no words to describe the stupidity of it.

7. "give a short speech...about how homophobia has no place at the concert"
while still collecting the filthy lucre raised by Donnie McClosetCase. That's no solution.

8. I think that because this article was written, Obama can't do it now.
Because if he did, everyone would just shake their heads knowing where it cam from.

Greenwald should have emailed this to his campaign instead of letting it get posted all over the internets.
