Republican as a dirty word- Repug/Rethug/Repuke

In 2004, though many people were at odds, there was still respect given to Republicans that crossover voted or were disillusioned with their party.

The term Republican is now thrown as an insult more times than I can count, using the terms Repug, Rethug and Repuke to anyone who doesn't agree with someones ideals or the candidate they stand behind. People post responses accusing people of being "Freepers" or "Paid Shills" "Fakes" when many of the people these insults are being hurled to have been members for years.

Yes it was still used way back when in 2004...but it was more a general type thing to describe the heavy right leaners

See this thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=195607&mesg_id=195607

Democratic Underground is likely the best known forum out there for Democrats to come, gather and discuss. It saddens me to no end, don't the majority of you realize that it's going to take a county...not a party...to change things around? We need those "Repug" voters to open their eyes, along with Independents. The only thing alienating them will do is not just tear them down but ourselves as well.

I looked for a good definition of Republicanism and how it compares to Democratic values, this was taken from Oxford University Press. -- http://www.answers.com/topic/republican (Under US Government Guide tab)
<snip>

Republicanism is the belief in the worth of a republic, a type of government that is based on the consent of the governed and is conducted by elected representatives of the people. In a republican government, the people are sovereign, or supreme, because their representatives serve at their pleasure for the common good. Today, people tend to use the terms republic and representative democracy interchangeably. In contrast to a republic, a pure or direct democracy is a form of government in which the people govern directly—in a town meeting, for example—instead of through representatives whom they elect.

<snip>

It's no wonder so many are unsatisfied with their parties. The heart and soul has gone out of them.

On the Republican side, their elected Representatives are not only NOT following what they were voted in to do, but pursuing their own personal agendas with furthering their careers instead of repairing our country.

We are seeing the same thing now on the Democratic side, where all are supposed to have a voice...the majority goes unheard.

It's heartbreaking.

Maybe instead of building up the walls we should be looking at tearing them down.

1. Nope
Rethuglicans need to go the way of the Whigs. The party needs to be destroyed and a new one constructed with a different name. In fact I visualize our current Dem leadership taking the place of the traditional republicans, (I view them as Eisenhower republicans) with the left wing, the progressive wing of our party being the 2nd party. We will have a new two party system.

We do not need the crazy fundie theocrats and the fascists. They have taken over the republican party and THAT party needs to become extinct.

3. Why would it have to be a two party system?
I think we would be much better off with a parliamentary style of Congress, with several parties that accurately represent their constituents.

8. I hate to say it...
But I do agree with this

"We do not need the crazy fundie theocrats and the fascists. They have taken over the republican party and THAT party needs to become extinct."

Extremists of any sort shouldn't be in politics or representing anyone, it's very detrimental.

2. The Republican Party is an insult.
Six years of their putrid rule broke this country, and destroyed its future.

And they continue to hold this country back with hypocrisy and obstructionism. republicans are responsible for were we are. It drives me crazy when some self identified republican blames chimpy, as if he is a lone a bad apple. He did all the harm he did within his Party. As the head of his Party, with full support from his Party.

I am always pleased when some open their eyes and realize what the lies they've been fed. And, it will take a lot of work from a lot of people to fix all the damage. But, if anyone has watched this administration and its Party with its lock-step march to our demise and still votes for a Republican---they are most certainly Pukes.

6. The walls that have been built...
by the rethugs are way too big and the foundation is way too deep to be budged. BTW, those walls are there to keep us commoners in our place.

7. Good point...
But I still can't help wishing that we could all come together as a country...instead of a party.

I know it's alot to ask, or hope for.../sigh

9. Sadly, I think...
we are way beyond that point. I never thought it could get any worse than it was during Raygun's years. I was wrong!! Can it get worse than it is now? Unfortunately, I'm afraid so.
