In 2004, though many people were at odds, there was still respect given to Republicans that crossover voted or were disillusioned with their party.
The term Republican is now thrown as an insult more times than I can count, using the terms Repug, Rethug and Repuke to anyone who doesn't agree with someones ideals or the candidate they stand behind. People post responses accusing people of being "Freepers" or "Paid Shills" "Fakes" when many of the people these insults are being hurled to have been members for years.
Yes it was still used way back when in 2004...but it was more a general type thing to describe the heavy right leaners

It saddens me to no end, don't the majority of you realize that it's going to take a county...not a party...to change things around? We need those "Repug" voters to open their eyes, along with Independents. The only thing alienating them will do is not just tear them down but ourselves as well.
I looked for a good definition of Republicanism and how it compares to Democratic values, this was taken from Oxford University Press. --

<snip>
Republicanism is the belief in the worth of a republic, a type of government that is based on the consent of the governed and is conducted by elected representatives of the people. In a republican government, the people are sovereign, or supreme, because their representatives serve at their pleasure for the common good. Today, people tend to use the terms republic and representative democracy interchangeably. In contrast to a republic, a pure or direct democracy is a form of government in which the people govern directly—in a town meeting, for example—instead of through representatives whom they elect.

It's no wonder so many are unsatisfied with their parties. The heart and soul has gone out of them.
On the Republican side, their elected Representatives are not only NOT following what they were voted in to do, but pursuing their own personal agendas with furthering their careers instead of repairing our country.
We are seeing the same thing now on the Democratic side, where all are supposed to have a voice...the majority goes unheard.
It's heartbreaking.
Maybe instead of building up the walls we should be looking at tearing them down.
