Okay, here's another example that the rich have won and the rest
of us will soon be on our own...

http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/topstocks/archive/2007/10/26/latest-california-status-symbol-private-fire-fighters.aspx

What once was considered a civic responsibility has been sloughed off by the wealthy as they prepare to hide themselves in enclaves...

Privae security, private roads, private fireprotection....

The rest of us schlubs will soon be left to fend for ourselves...

If we let unchecked capitalism continue the way it has been over the last 27 or so years...

there will not be walls high enough to keep the proles out.

2. Private fire departments?
So, if you are not a paid subscriber then the fire department lets your house burn down?

What if a pay my dues, but my neighbor does not, then his house catches on fire? Does that mean that I have to nervously watch his house burn down and the fire department won't come to my house until the fire crosses the property line?

3. reminds me of one of my favorite Onion stories...

Libertarian Reluctantly Calls Fire Department

CHEYENNE, WY—After attempting to contain a living-room blaze started by a cigarette, card-carrying Libertarian Trent Jacobs reluctantly called the Cheyenne Fire Department Monday. "Although the community would do better to rely on an efficient, free-market fire-fighting service, the fact is that expensive, unnecessary public fire departments do exist," Jacobs said. "Also, my house was burning down." Jacobs did not offer to pay firefighters for their service.

4. Hey, the LA Times had this story today as well...

I thought it was kind of interesting that these folks were buying that sort of fire insurance...

Most of these people live out in the wilderness, and fires are a real risk there...

Of course, you could argue that they have no business being out there in the first place...

I don't really see this as a threat to the rest of us, though...
