Iowa Support For Biden & How He Might Break Into Top Tier To Win. IT IS POSSIBLE!
Edited on Fri Nov-02-07 09:36 AM by cryingshame
This is from a DU'er who lives in Iowa. I asked that DU'er if they could characterize Biden's support in Iowa and his chance in their caucus. The DU'er who wrote the following is active in Dem politics and prefers to remain anonymous and maintain their impartiality. It speaks to the question of HOW Biden can pull a rabbit out of the hat and win.

My question:

Do your Iowa neighbors discuss or show support for Biden?

Answer:

"Actually he has quite a following - several loyal supporters from Dubuque and Scott Counties from his 1988 race. He has a strong group of about 30 in Black Hawk (all strong Democrats who vote in primaries and attend caucuses). I'd bet he has a small core of support in each of Iowa's 99 counties. (maybe not the numbers of a Clinton/Obama/Edwards but the Biden supporters are historically active - I'd rather have loyalty than soft #'s at this point).

One thing Biden has going for him is that he is very much THE #2 choice for caucus-goers if their candidate isn't viable. Now, you may not think that is much if the first choice is one of the Big Three, but if he ends up getting the support of non-viable Richardson/Dodd/Kucinich supporters he could very well surpass the third place finisher.

I think he has the potential of landing some 'undecideds' or some who may get disenchanted in the next 60 days. I don't see him placing less than fourth and very possibly third coming out of Iowa."

I believe he has a very good chance to come out strong in Iowa. I've thought this for a long time, as he is so good at retail politics in a state where they don't pay much attention to the MSM spin.

3. I think people are underestimating how powerful those small group meetings can be...
The meet and greet he held in the next town over (10 miles away) has had a huge impact. He got two positive writeups by the weekly paper (that sells more copies in our community than the state daily), there have been letters to the editor about him, and now nearly all the dems I know are either planning to support him, OR he is a second choice (mostly for Edwards, a couple for Obama). Compare that to three months ago when you asked folks they'd say non-comitally "I don't know..I'm thinking about looking at Hillary". And there's REAL passion for Biden. Those who take the time to learn about him, his record and his policies find themselves bowled over with "Why didn't I back this guy sooner?"
I can't wait for the caucus.

6. Everybody should have a friend in Iowa
as my friend said he liked Edwards. he asked me and i said "Biden". he laughed and told me Biden was his #2. I replied that I have the degree in poli-sci and he should vote for Biden. laughing he said if I sent him a sixer of fat tire or Avalanche (Colorado micro-brews) he would. I sent off cases of each, with a note to caucus for Biden.

7. I don't think he will win Iowa...
But he could break to very good results...

I would certainly prefer Biden over Obama and Edwards....

9. Even a good showing will garner him more attention, and I personally
believe (of course:7) that the more people who get a chance to "get to know" him, will see in him the wisdom and experience he can bring to the WH.

10. I would like to point out...by way of patting myself on the back...
That I was one of the few around here to warn against underestimating Biden when he announced. I've heard him speak in person and actually met him twice...so know how talented he is!

I'd have thought you daft.

23. We all might be a bit daft.
That's why we need someone really sane as our president. I think Joe Biden is the most sane candidate running. But what do I know. I'm a daft as Daffy Duck.

8. Funny that in my top four, three have to fail
to get one in the top tier. Funny or sad? Oh well, at least there will be a chance for someone I like if things shake out.

13. If Biden makes it even in 3rd place, he will be the story because the msm has written him off.
I'm hoping this weeks debate will have moved him up from everybody's 2nd choice.

Whatever gets you through the day!
Although even an (improbable and unlikely) entry into the 3rd or even 4th slot (echoes of 3-way-ties for third) would hardly catapult Plugs into the "Top Tier" which, rightfully understood, is Hillary's: She's in a Tier of Her Own.

Booyah!

30. Plugs ain't bad. I'm more proud of "A Tier of Her Own" if you must know -
the whole Virginia Woolf reference - so apt for our first woman President. You never know what will work though! :hi:

29. I'm an Iowa Biden...I think he can hit the job running...
Talk about knowing your opponents. Biden has been around for so long, I'm sure he knows the various personalities enough he can bring them together to get things cleaned up and moving again. He's not afraid to speak his mind and doesn't waste time with political "speakese" which is a plus in my opinion.

How can you look at Biden's smile and relaxed attitude and not like him?
