Since DU seems to like 2004 analogies, has Edwards become Gephardt?
The early favorite in Iowa with tons of unions support who finds his lead there flitting away and decides to go hyper negative on the frontrunner?

16. He just lost me.
Attack real differences all you want. But twisting debate induced sound bites into looking like inconsistencies when it isn't, loses me.

5. Interesting thought and one I was just thinking yesterday.
Do you think it will have the same effect and propel Biden to victory in the end?

7. Who knows.....
But Biden share a few similarities with Kerry as a long standing Senator.

17. I can definitely see this
I prefer Kerry to Biden, but that is more based on personality. Biden, like Kerry in 2004, is the person with the strongest foreign policy credentials. Like Kerry, he is also strong on other issues as well.

9. Without a crystal ball
Here it is. Edwards is not where he wants to be yet and has banked the farm on Iowa. This is not a comforting position. If he wins the win also has to catch fire. Another if and then another until momentum takes over. So much for today. We will see what tomorrow brings. Most of what is holding him in relative check is simply that neither of the other two have folded. Knocking out Obama might even be impossible in Iowa even if the glow is finally taken off of Hillary. If Obama loses big then at this point in the contest it is uphill if Hillary remains competitive. Without something sweeping the national electorate Hillary still has advantages more than Dean could grasp after his defeat. Edwards needs, like Dean, big cash to capitalize on a win. A loss and his campaign goes nobly on with less.

Must wins and uphill battles and three ways. It is hard to be totally optimistic. Hillary could be damaged as well by ANY contest with every one waking up to that only after it is all over and she moves on to a very different, more savage game.

11. That's an apt analogy.
Although Edwards seems to try to appeal to unions, several large ones endorsed Clinton (probably frontrunning the likely candidate.)

At first it was only Elizabeth Edwards who mentioned Clinton by name - now John has become an attacker as well.

18. The Unions and
the Black vote are split. Overall that might be called hedging the bets if it were that monolithic. One union wants to support everyone including the GOP eventual nominee. That says a lot. No one owns the constituency field anymore than Hillary owns the women's vote. That means loss of monolithic influence or gambling or a statement from any group so split. I'd rather be irrelevant than risk or I'm not sure.

Advantage: the strange Third Way politics of meaningless unity and weak division.
