Andrew Sullivan's blog: A reader writes about Obama's speech at "historically black" NCCU
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 07:50 AM by flpoljunkie
A reader writes:

Yesterday, I went to see Barack Obama speak at North Carolina Central University, a "Historically Black College" in Durham, North Carolina. The vast majority of the crowd was black. In his riffing on what groups we cannot allow to be scapegoated in the next election, Barack built to and concluded with "homosexuals" ... to the conspicuous (and regrettable) silence of the crowd.

It wasn't the "right" thing to say politically, but it was the right thing to say. The national media certainly wouldn't have reported on it had he left homosexuality out of this particular speech. All he accomplished, by sticking to his principles, was run the risk of alienating people whose support he desperately needs. Though, in fairness, this did cement my support.

Andrew, this man is a strong ally. Anyone for whom sexuality issues are important would be making a grievous error to jump his ship over the Donnie McClurkin fiasco.

Can you imagine Senator Clinton defending "homosexuals" in front of a non-gay crowd? Unimaginable.

1. He did the same thing months ago at the Howard University debate
When the discussion turned toward how to deal with AIDS:

"I think John {Edwards'} prescriptions are right. I would add the issue of prevention -- involves education. And one of the things that we've got to overcome -- (applause) -- one of the things we've got to overcome is a stigma that still exists in our communities. We don't talk about this. We don't talk about it in the schools. Sometimes we don't talk about it in the churches. It has been an aspect of sometimes homophobia that we don't address this issue as clearly as it needs to be."

This may not have gotten much play in the media at the time because he said this just moments befor Hillary Clinton hit it out of the park with the best sound byte of the night: "You know, it is hard to disagree with anything that has been said, but let me just put this in perspective. If HIV/AIDS were the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 25 and 34, there would be an outraged outcry in this country. (Cheers, applause.)"

But Obama has been speaking against homophobia and doing it in front of non-gay audience - it just hasn't gotten much attention until recently.

2. And now that the McClurkin issue is here there are so many people who will ignore. . .
. . .anything he does on behalf of the gay community. Everyone who is outraged over the McClurkin issue has every right to be, buy its just ridiculous to go so far as to paint Obama as anti-gay.

8. You can blame that on McClurkin, who chose to act like a bigoted ass on his own.

9. Except that the Obama campaign knew that he was a bigoted ass.
It wasn't like they were blindsided by this.

16. He was given a microphone and a starring role
He was given all the time in the world to spew his homophobic filth. And not a single Obama staffer did a thing about it.

I call that tacit approval

7. Can you imagine Clinton or any other candidate giving a microphone and an audience to an "ex-gay"
clown and letting him sprew 1/2 of homophobic filth at one of their fundraisers?

Obama should practice what he preaches.

I can't begin to figure out why that is considering how many views it's had, how long it's been up, and the fact that it's on the Greatest Page.

20. Interesting, isn't it?
"Nobody says anything about Hillaryyyyyyy." over and over again.

But then when somebody says something about Hillary they have nothing to say. It boggles the mind.

22. Opinions differ but facts are non-negotiable. Many candidates have made mistakes.
Unlike Clinton and Obama, Richardson has actually made homophobic statements.

I don't have a problem with any of them. All have good records on supporting LGBT rights
and I'd be comfortable supporting any of them over a Republican in 2008.

18. Sullivan argued effectively for Obama on Bill Maher's show.
I think Sullivan has more credibility than most pundits because he was willing to admit he made a mistake on supporting Bush. He dismantled Clark's argument in support of Hillary pretty effectively.

24. Bareback Andy is not a fan of the latex

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Sullivan

"In May 2001, Village Voice columnist Michael Musto said that Sullivan had anonymously posted advertisements for bareback sex (anal sex without a condom) on America Online and the now-defunct website barebackcity.com. Subsequently, the Italian-American journalist and activist Michelangelo Signorile wrote about the scandal in a front-page article in the New York gay magazine LGNY, igniting a storm of controversy. Later, in a defiant blog post titled 'Sexual McCarthyism: An article no one should have to write', Sullivan confirmed the allegations while arguing that the matters covered by the controversy were private and should not have been put into the public domain by his critics."

But, of course, Bill Clinton was "reckless"...

25. Why the quotation marks in historically black? The organization is called HBCU:
Historically Black Colleges and Universities. I know, I used to be a faculty member at an HBCU!
