The main lesson the Bush Regime should teach us
is that the Presidency is essential to the ability to shape public policy. The past year has proven conclusively that it is impossible to govern from the Legislative Branch alone. The ability of the executive to frame debates and act unilaterally is much too strong for even a disciplined party to effectively counterbalance. The Democrats' small voting edge coupled with our intrinsic lack of discipline has compromised our ability to save our Constitution and end this immoral war.
I hope and pray that as the primary season becomes more divisive, we Liberals keep this lesson in mind. Another 4/8 years of Republican rule could very well sound the death knell to our democracy. I am not squeamish about vigorous debate and there is a legitimate place in politics for negative, if honest, campaigning. But let's not come out of our intramural warfare so bitter that we hurt our chances next November.Let's keep our eye on the prize of the WH, secure in the knowledge that all of our candidates are light years better than any of the Cro-Magnons on the other side.
