Democratic Defections Clear Path For Mukasey
This is unacceptable! It's like if I knew the man I was marrying was a chronic wife-beater, but since there were no other potential husbands on the horizon...

Democratic Defections Clear Path For Mukasey
2 Senators Say Nominee Is Best Bush Would Offer

By Dan Eggen and Paul Kane

The nomination fight over attorney general nominee Michael B. Mukasey effectively came to an end yesterday, as two key Senate Democrats parted from their colleagues and announced their support for the former judge despite his controversial statements on torture.

The orchestrated announcements by Sens. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) and Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) virtually guarantee that Mukasey will be approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, to be followed by his likely confirmation in the full Senate later in the month.

The developments mark an important political victory for President Bush, who mounted a spirited and aggressive defense of Mukasey in recent days. They also underscore the pitfalls facing Democrats as the party struggles to stake out an independent policy on national security issues during a presidential campaign season.

1. I am just guessing but I assume that Mukasey was the lessor
of other possible evils. Lets hope that he will not be able to do much damage in his one year in office. I assume that the post cannot remain vacant until the 2008 election.

2. I think that's what Schumer and Feinstein were saying - that this is the best
we'll get from Bush. On one hand I can understand the reasoning, on the other, we're letting him get away with it AGAIN. We have to stop it. I don't know what the solution could be, but I DO feel they can do a LOT of damage in one year.

With so many Dems against him, they must feel that no one is better than someone, when that someone is obviously willing to let Bush slide on this issue.

3. I assume they will apologize, as well.
Nothing is going to change. Bush gets everything he wants. He has not yet destroyed Social Security; that's all he has failed at. Time to start figuring it out before we attack Iran: The Dems won't stand unified against this madman, and the Republicans will never desert him, no matter how insane he acts. We are in deep trouble. Personally, my goal in three years is to move to a small community in northern Michigan, and then try to make my community as good as it can be. There is no hope anymore on the national level. 2008 will seal our doom.
