5. Just because Witch rhymes with a misogynistic term...
does not make it a misgynitic term on its own. IT WAS A COMEDY SKIT ABOUT HALLOWEEN! What do you expect them to do? Make her a Man? Wouldn't that be just as disresectful?

I am so sick of Hillary and her supporters hiding behind this excuse.

6. That you're actually trying to defend "witch" in this context
is truly incredible.

If they'd had Obama in a ghost outfit and called him a "spook" is there ANY way that would not have been racist?

9. Not even close to the same thing and you know it.
This is a completely absurd argument. is this what we can expect if she's elected President?

14. It's the exact same thing
Calling a woman a "witch" implies that they are unpleasant, pushy, bitchy, nasty - all stereotypical references to women who participate in worlds which are usually accorded masculine deference.

33. Many men have been called witches.
It was not uncommon for men to be called witches and accused of witchcraft in the past. 25% of those accused in Salem were men. Throughout the European witch hunts, the percentages leaned more towards women, but there were still thousands of men accused of being witches.

It is a common misconception to think that the term has a definite gender connotation.

If you're going to criticize people, it's more effective if you spell your insults correctly.

23. Yes, it is. And I wasn't playing Grammar Police; I was playing Spelling Police.
Making the point only that the inability to spell, or the indifference to it, detracts a bit from one's credibility.

8. So I suppose criticism of Condi Rice is racist and misogynistic.
For what it's worth, the skit was tasteless and not funny, but it wasn't misogynistic.

25. For what it's worth, every one of the Democratic
candidates got slammed in that and the later skit except Bill Richardson and Barack Obama. I guess they were sensitive to the race issue about that and nothing else. Comedy is supposed to be about, among other things, pointing out the absurd. The problem is that they weren't funny about it and that is why the skit flopped. I personally would have added a coronet to the costume and let the characters tell her how much they liked her queen costume, a much better depiction of what they were trying to say and less offensive. She still could have claimed to be a bride. Apparently, their comedy writers are still in junior high mentally.

19. I'm wondering what will win out in the end
The irrational (and hypocritical) Obama hatred on DU, or the insistence in maintaining misogyny as an acceptable form of bigotry on this forum. This is going to be interesting.

On the bright side, I'm hoping this may cause some DUers to finally get it. Usually, threads about the insulting depiction of women in the media drop like stones or become flamefests. Now that the Democratic frontrunner is being subjected to it - and it could have devastating real world consequences - maybe some of the more clueless around here will see that it's not harmless.

31. Haven't seen the skit, but...
Some of the attacks on HRC have been misogynistic. Others have been entirely routine by the standards of modern politics. A lot of this strikes me as somewhat similar to the old line that if you criticised Israel, you were anti-semitic; if you criticised Gonzo or Rice or Obama, you were racist. Sure, it's possible for an attack on any of them to constitute racism or whatever but it's also a convienient way to derail a fair criticism. If it is sexist to vote against HRC because she's a woman, it is equally sexist to expect special treatment for her due to her gender.

I'm a Brit. We've already had a female leader here so this isn't any real novelty for me (although admittedly, HRC is nowhere near the monster that Thatcher was) and I have too many problems with her policies and voting record to vote for her even if I was allowed to but that has nothing to do with her possession of a working uterus. We haven't had a black PM yet but Obama would make a great president... in eight years, when he's got some more experiance (and he'd make an excellent VP for that reason).
