Yes, calling Hillary a witch really is sexist.
Just because she was full of shit when her campaign first tried to play her debate loss as a gender issue, that isn't a license for anyone, candidate or otherwise, to make just any gendered reference to her that they please. It is my opinion that the comedy context was irrelevant. SNL was "kidding on the square" as Al Franken would say. In other words, the "joke" was just a pretext for mysogyny.

The question is, how badly does this reflect on Obama, especially since this is the second time he's been involved in this sort of slam on another group.

4. The childlike innocence of that remark is so...breathtaking.
I marvel at the utter disillusion soon to come.

3. Well, just hope it's never your group that disagrees with him.
Because he talks high road, but doesn't appear to travel on it.

19. And that's exactly what I DO call her.

Although I do use "HRC" here sometimes (in a non-derogatory manner of course).

12. It seems sexist that you think it is sexist.
I know many pagan men that consider themselves witches. Mountains out of molehills.

15. Ignorance
I'm not trying to call you stupid. I mean "ignorance" in the purest form of the word.

The reason that Pagans of any gender use the term Witch is for the same reason that GLBT people refer to themselves as queer. It's about reclamation of a term that was used by the oppressor. In modern, pagan parlance the term is gender neutral and just means a practitioner of the Craft; "warlock" means oathbreaker is highly offensive, and is never used except as an insult.

But, just because some people use this term in a positive way (and there has been widespread debate in the Pagan community about the propriety of using such a loaded term, ever since the first Pagan Witch called him/herself one), does not negate the fact that people still use it as a sexist pejorative (despite our best efforts). And, as visible as Witches are these days, the majority of Americans still don't know that we exist or know anything about what it is we actually do. This is actually why a lot of Neo-Wiccans in particular are squeamish about using the word. They feel that the word can never be reclaimed.

Context is everything.

get some OTT offense taken!

That said, context IS everything.

13. It was a sketch show
Other politicians have been called names on that show. I didn't think much of it. That's the nature of the show. They make fun of everybody.

16. That's true, but these things don't exist in a vacuum
This is why, as a feminist and an unabashed pop culture junkie, I like to analyze these things. Comedy in particular reflects our values as a culture more often than not.

I think the question of why we regard certain things as funny is a fascinating one.

14. "HIllary is a bitch" is the official smear of the GOP, like "Gore is a liar"
from 2000. "Hillary is a witch" is just a variant. If anyone uses it, they are a mouthpiece of the GOP, nothing more than media whores, down on their knees servicing their corporate masters.

"Edwards is a phony" is also a smear of this election.

If Obama is nominated, we will start hearing every possible permutation of "Obama is black" some of which will make the "Call me, Harold" sound tame.

Anyone at DU caught using a variant of "Hillary is a bitch" should be beaten with a wet noodle for promoting a Republican political slogan.

20. What a pile of crap! At least there were no baseball references to her hitting ability.
"Will she knock it out of the park or will she bunt?"

And bunt is so close to sounding like another word!

OMG!

Please don't let someone say Hillary will bunt!

If you do, the terrorists win!

LoL

3rd-grade crap!
