Raise your hand if an SNL skit is far less important to you than...
A never-ending war in Iraq
A possible war in Iran
40 Million+ Americans who are un- or under- insured
A steadily declining economy
The disappearing middle class
The Housing market collapse
Unthinkable fuel and food prices
A crumbling American education system
The fact that GLBT Americans are still second-class citizens in the eyes of the law
The fact that corporations still considered 'persons'
A future AG that isn't sure what 'torture' is, and who approves of unconstitutional wiretapping...

Etc....

*raises hand*

10. Can't people be concerned about how women are perceived in this society?
I'm concerned about all of these things you mentioned. Hell, in GD, JackBeck posted about another hate crime involving two gay men in New Jersey. You have NO idea how furious reading about that senseless homophobic, hatemongering shit makes me.

At this point, I don't give a flying fuck about the skit. SNL is a stupid show that frequently employs the lowest common denominator with humor. SNL is a stupid, consistently unfunny show that should have been cancelled around 1989.

But...I can see how some are taken aback about how women are still perceived by some in this society. The SNL crap was a context for these discussions.

I don't know if you can understand what I'm saying with this post. I hope it makes sense.

13. I do understand, however...
Tons and tons of threads about this particular incident seem to be overkill, especially b/c if it weren't about a presidential candidate, nobody would care whatsoever. Hell, any thread about sexism in GD turns into a massive flamewar, and now that HC is the target, it's time to get up in arms about it. It just rings false to me, and seems to be the day's distraction. I'm a woman, and one in a field (Economics) where the deck is stacked against me. But, I'd rather we not focus on a crap show's skit. That's all. Just my .02. :)

19. I understand.
I guess that's the nature of things around here. If something hits a nerve, there will sometimes be scores of threads on the same subject. I'm not about to condemn that...look at the number of threads the past week about the McClurkin thing. I think the outrage was such that I perfectly understood the number of threads. Hell, I posted, it seemed like in all of them. :-)

I couldn't understand all of the threads about John Edwards' haircut. I scratched my head over that controversy.

I guess we each have subjects that we're passionate about.

Very like smokers who insisted that air pollution meant what they were doing was insignificant.

Yes, there are vast awfulnesses out there every minute of every day. But that is a rotten, LAZY excuse for not attending to the smaller awfulness right in front of your face.

I'm sure if a candidate were to call Obama a N******, his supporters would say that it's practically a non-issue, since it's not nearly as important as the war, right?

I don't think it's anywhere near the McChickenhead stunt, or the Kyl-Lieberman vote, or that fuckwit future AG.

I just think it reveals some things about our society, is all.

26. Priorities
I mean, if Obama had called her a witch at the debate or something, that would have been something to have 8 billion threads over. This warrants some discussion (and it boggles me that there are folks who see nothing misogynistic about using witch as a slur) but I think it's kind of dumb that people are going nuts over the content of a skit on a show that hasn't been funny in years...

Then again this place went into apoplexy over Edwards' haircut.

31. Why can't we just think it was coded, sexist language
without being accused of exaggerating its importance? It was a misogynist reference on a tv show that has some cultural relevance. That doesn't mean anyone who was offended by it thinks any less or any more of all the things you cite in the OP.

34. Sure, think that...
A brazillion threads about it? Er, I don't get it. And SNL has very little cultural relevance these days, afaik. If it had been Obama calling her that in a debate or something, sure! But c'mon...Like I said to someone else, when I see HC making a big deal of it, I'll give it greater merit as an issue we need to debate endlessly on a boring Sunday.

:)

37. Those threads were cumulative
so I imagine a lot of people felt the same way about it. There were a bazillion threads about McLurkface and it wasn't because it was somehow orchestrated. People were genuinely pissed off. I don't think an SNL skit has much weight in our lives, but it is representative of something that does: language used to demean categories of individuals.

Having said that, this particular incident will fade away pretty quickly. The underlying issue of sexism won't.
