Play of the Day: Richardson awards medal

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson on Monday presented the Purple Heart to the grateful family of Cpl. Clem Robert Boody nearly 57 years after he went missing in action during the Korean War.

"I didn't think I'd see this day in any shape or form - not in my lifetime," said Robert VanNevele, the 65-year-old nephew of Boody. "After a while, you just give up."

Richardson, a former U.N. ambassador, diplomatic troubleshooter and frequent visitor to North Korea, said the reclusive government told him earlier this year that they were willing to turn over the remains of six U.S. soldiers if he would come to the country.

Working through the White House, Richardson was part of a bipartisan delegation that secured the remains.

Boody's niece, Stacey Brewer, contacted Richardson to let him know that her uncle's remains had been positively identified among the group. She also said the family had tried unsuccessfully for years to get Boody's Purple Heart from the Defense Department.

Richardson credited his staff for securing the Purple Heart and the White House for arranging the delegation. Like any politician, he also spoke proudly - and at length - about his efforts.

Richardson said the North Koreans turned to him "because of the long work that I had pursued" in negotiations with the country.

Boody was from Independence, Mo. Brewer and VanNevele live in Iowa, whose caucuses traditionally kick off presidential voting.

Taking advantage of the political kismet, Richardson joined them and other Boody family members at the American Legion Hispanic Post 731, where he presented the Purple Heart "on behalf of a grateful nation."
