Democrats Win Two Key Senate Races in Virginia
Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 10:53 PM by cal04
Control of the Senate Still Hinges on a Handful of Races Elsewhere in the State
By Michael D. Shear, Tim Craig and Brigid Schulte
Washington Post Staff Writers

Democrats won two key state Senate races today -- one in Virginia Beach and one on the Eastern Shore -- in their effort to seize control of the chamber from the Republicans for the first time in a decade.

Control of the Senate still hinged on a handful of other races, where the parties were battling toward a tie or where too few votes had been counted. Returns in some of the largest population centers in Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun were trickling in slowly.

By 10 p.m., Democrats had claimed victory on the Eastern Shore, where Democrat Ralph S. Northam defeated incumbent Republican Nick Rerras. And in Tidewater, Democrat John C. Miller defeated Republican Patricia B. "Tricia" Stall for an open seat last held by a Republican.

Democrats appeared poised to add a third seat to their numbers: Democrat J.C. "Chap" Petersen led Republican incumbent Jeannemarie Devolites Davis by a wide margin with two-thirds of the votes counted. The race, a bitter and costly one, played out in a key swing district in central Fairfax County.

4. I never thought I'd live to see the day when Virginia turned blue.
But thanks to Bush & Co., it has. So much for a permanent Republican majority, eh?

10. That's got to be better than Gov. Macaca.
NoVA's voters will prevail and send Macaca Man packing for good -- I hope.
