Pat Robertson To Endorse Ghouliani
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 08:46 AM by jefferson_dem

Pat Robertson To Endorse Giuliani

Pat Robertson, one of the most influential figures in the social conservative movement, will announce his support for Rudy Giuliani's presidential bid this morning in Washington, D.C., according to sources familiar with the decision.

Pat Robertson's endorsement of Rudy Giuliani is a significant blow to Mitt Romney, who has worked hard to court evangelical leaders. Above, Robertson speaks to the Christian Coalition in 1999. (File photo: James A. Parcell - The Washington Post)Robertson's support was coveted by several of the leading Republican candidates and provides Giuliani with a major boost as the former New York City mayor seeks to convince social conservatives that, despite his positions on abortion and gay rights, he is an acceptable choice as the GOP nominee.

It also slows any momentum for Mitt Romney within the social conservative movement. Romney had recently secured the backing of conservative stalwarts Paul Weyrich and Bob Jones III -- endorsements that seemed to strengthen his bid to become the electable conservative alternative to Giuliani. Romney had made no secret of his desire for Robertson's endorsement and has to be disappointed this morning.

The other major effect of Robertson's support for Giuliani is that it will quiet talk in social conservative circles that nominating Giuliani would lead "values voters" to abandon the Republican Party. The stamp of approval from Robertson should assuage the doubts of many (although certainly not all) of the rank-and-file social conservatives.

Robertson is widely viewed as one of the pillars of the religious right. He founded the Christian Broadcasting Network, the Christian Coalition and Regent University in Virginia Beach. Robertson ran for president in 1988, finishing a surprising second in the Iowa caucuses before losing steam in later states. In recent years, Robertson has drawn considerable controversy for comments made about homosexuality.

1. Whoa.
This is pretty damn significant. A lot of people have been knocking Rudy, saying he'll never win the nomination because the fundies hate him. But he just got the endorsement of King Fundie himself. This could change a lot.

2. Not a surprise, really
If the fundies are behind Ghouliani we've got a serious problem, particularly if Hillary is the nominee.

3. This goes to prove it's all about politics and
has nothing to do with abortion or gay rights after all. What a f---ing bunch of hypocrites. Next thing the NRA will be endorsing him.

give the dems some talking points to hit back with. If you are so anti gay, so anti abortion, how can you endorse a man that supports both of those causes.

Do you suppose they will hit him with these questions at his press conference in a few hours? Do you suppose god came to him in the night and gave him this Revelation to support Rudy?

5. Good-bye Rudy!
By the way, is Robertson on the list that Grassley is investigating? It is always interesting to me to see these characters coming out with their endorsements like it's supposed to make a difference...separation of church and state, and all that jazz.

Perhaps we should bring that up each time they stick their noses into the political arena.

6. This election is going to come down to Rudy and Mittens--
and all the folks who said "Oh, evangelicals will NEVER vote for Rudy or a Mormon" will be proven wrong--they'll find a way to vote Republican, trust me.

He hasn’t been influential with me. This endorsement will keep him from being influential to many.

What a fraud. Either that or a senile old man. What kind of conservative religious leader endorses a pro-abort and pro-gay candidate?

11. Listening to Laura Ingraham--she cannot hide her disgust. She's really
ripping into Pat and Rudy. She's one of those zealous mid-life Catholic converts who sneer at lifelong lapsed Catholics like Rudy, so I'm not surprised. Amusing to see the RW radio assholes go into convulsions over this.

12. Sounds like what Robertson is doing is assuring himself from Rudy
about what kind of judges from the Supreme on down he will appoint. All about the courts which trumps over abortion, gay rights, etc.
