CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll. Nov. 2-4, 2007. Adults nationwide.
"In a procedure known as 'waterboarding,' interrogators produce the sensation of drowning in a restrained prisoner by either dunking him in water or pouring water over his face. Do you consider this procedure to be a form of torture, or not?" N=528 adults, MoE ± 4.5 (Form A)
Torture 69% / Not Torture 29% / Unsure 2%
"In a procedure known as 'waterboarding,' interrogators produce the sensation of drowning in a restrained prisoner by either dunking him in water or pouring water over his face. Do you think the U.S. government should or should not be allowed to use this procedure to attempt to get information from suspected terrorists?" N=496 adults, MoE ± 4.5 (Form B)
Allowed 40% / Not Allowed 58% / Unsure 2%

3. That 11% worries me less than the 29% of rationalizers.

Saying "we should use torture" is at least less dishonest than "We do not torture... because whatever we do is, by definition, not torture."

2. Of course, two different questions from two different groups would
skew things, but as I read it, if 29% think it is not torture, and 40% say it should be allowed, that would indicate that 11% who think it IS torture think it should be allowed. THAT scares me.

4. it's slightly comforting that the actively pro-torture group is smaller than Bush's core support
Look;s like even most Bush supporters prefer to believe that, "We don't torture!"

5. The question should be: What percentage of people who've been waterboarded think it's torture?
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 02:53 PM by Perry Logan
Not counting those who died during the procedure.

6. I suspect you could waterboard someone into saying it isn't torture
