This is why the greatest page means nothing to me.
Edited on Thu Nov-08-07 05:56 PM by LoZoccolo
Right now the false Hillary Clinton tip story (which says that she did not leave a tip) has 21 recommendations, and the true one (which says that she did leave a tip) has 18 recommendations.

The greatest page is junk. I'm tempted to think of it as a barometer of what's not true.

What would be awesome is this one getting to #1 on the front page.

10. Her Co-Workers Must Have Ripped Her Off
UPDATE: The Clinton campaign contacted ABC News to assert that they did, contrary to Esterday's claim to NPR, pay $157 for food at Maid-Rite and left a $100 tip to be split among the staff.

Sensing the story was reaching the tipping point, ABC News' Eloise Harper contacted Brad Crawford, manager of Maid-Rite caught in the political mixer, who said the senator's staff did pay a tip but "it might have not been disbursed properly."

34. most likely is that someone in the staff saw $100...
and went all Gollum on the rest of the wait staff, or something to that effect. (Which is basically what the manager said, btw.)

The Clinton campaign knows there are people like you out there--on both the left and right--who'll believe any random BS that comes up, so wouldn't they be extra careful not to, say, stiff a waitress for a tip on a $157 meal?

Geez, I'm no fan of Hillary, but I'm not an idiot about it.

There was a campaign organist who paid the bill and left the tip both at the same time....$100 DOLLAR TIP. And in the same article...the manager said that he might not have distributed the tip equally...so whose fault was that....but then Hillary haters don't need the truth, the make up the story if it is negative to Hillary. Looks like.

That would be one of the stupidest things they could do (intentionally stiff an service person), and they are not stupid. Plus if that was their practice, there would be lots of stories like this.

I'm not a Hillary fan. She's my least favorite Dem, but I would still choose her over any Repug.

113. You could argue the opposite, though.
You could say that because they've worked together for so long, they wouldn't accuse each other of theft. But because they are unlikely to accuse each other, one of them might have taken advantage of that trust and took the $100 tip.

Your scenario is quite plausible. Having worked as a server and a bartender previously, I've seen all kinds of things happen between friends, coworkers and management when it comes to tips.

Staff handles that sort of thing, most people know that. Although I can imagine how the waitress felt when there was no tip on the table. Who knows what happened after that. Maybe the owner really did decide to just pocket the $100. Regardless, this really is stupid.

56. I thought your thread would be about how disappointing it is that
silly fluff often makes the greatest page, instead of what should be there: the deep, compelling important political discussions and news or well-written, well-researched original journal entries.

Instead, this thread is three lines of more of the same fluff.

The Greatest Page should hold material deemed great - there are dozens of other forums for the rest.

This isn't a real issue. I personally can't fathom how this shit gets legs. This is just a stupid excuse for Hillary supporters to act offended, and anyone else supporters to act triumphant. Kyl - Lieberman was a real issue, Hillary's right wing approach to foreign affairs is a real issue. Getting worked up about a tip is the equivalent of impeachment for a blowjob. And this wasted thread has how many recs? Ridiculous.

It means that this website, a site for DEMOCRATS, is being hijacked by people who have openly posted that they will vote 3rd Party, not vote and yes, vote republican if Hillary gets the nomination.

I have no problem with debating the merits and downfalls of any of the candidates - and trust me, they all have it!! But I find it utter bullshit that I see the homepage hijacked by people who promote NOT voting for democrats when this site was specifically founded FOR democrats

83. Believe it or not, I don't mind criticisms of Democrats either.
The thing I get sore about is that people tend to blame and punish only the politician, not realizing that democracy is something where they have to participate and raise consensus. If there's only one candidate pushing single-payer health care, for example, it is probably because not many people know about it, and if people want the politicians not to be able to ignore it, they will have to raise consensus about it. But that requires hard work and dedication, and I wonder how many people here are substituting complaining on the Internet for what really needs to be done to get what they want.

3rd party people generally get that way out of disinfranchisement from one of the major parties. If we can't trust the Democrats to improve things in this country, then why should we waste our votes on them?

93. Great - then find a website for 3rd party
Like I said - bash candidates in a productive manner is all good. Trying to find ways to improve democracy is great but without a doubt, in this day and age, 3rd party voting is basically voting for the other party that is on the opposite side of the political spectrum.

It's a shitty statement to make but unfortunately that's how our system works and perhaps we need to fight harder to change the electorial voting system. Clearing what worked for our founding fathers 200+ years ago is not working today. I'll be the first person to jump on that bandwagon (I love the vote-off system in Louisiana where if none of the candidates get 50% of the votes then there is a run-off of the top 2 candidates).

But after the primaries, when the democratic nominee is picked, DU policy always has been that they support the democratic nominee and suggestions of voting non-democrat get locked. Even pro-Lieberman threads were locked (if they were found) after the primaries. (some will always slip through - moderating is a shitty, thankless job).

But as long as these hillary bashers (and even for some of the other candidates) to clearly state "I won't vote for Hillary in the general election" - well perhaps they should start looking for a new web forum for those discussion.

117. I always find it hilarious when partisans whine about third parties acting as spoiler when both
major parties have insured, through state law, that third parties can only function as spoilers.

You are blaming the victim, not the perps.

As a person who puts my planet, my country and the US constitution before my political party, I'm sure that people who put party first are very annoyed that I don't see my priorities as they see their priorities. I can't justify to myself voting for Hillary in the general. I'm opposed to empire and Hillary advocates empire. I am opposed to public financing of private insurance companies and Hillary is in favor of public subsidies of private insurance companies. I'm a dove and Hillary is a hawk.

If it's any consolation to you, I can guarantee that if Hillary is the nominee, my state won't be voting to award her our electoral college votes. So my not voting for her will not make a difference anyway. I won't be voting Repo, but will probably write in Kucinich.

After 30 some years of only voting for the Dem nominee for President, I guess I've outgrown that attachment.

123. I know, I just think trying to fit everybody into the country into "red" or "blue"
is bad for the country, and very bad for progressives.

While I'm not an advocate for third parties under the current system imposed by the two major parties, I'm still very opposed to the stifling of political pluralism as achived by the two major parties.

I think fusion voting and instant runoff voting are both constitutional means to achieve that. This would allow other parties to organize and compete without being forever relegated to a spoiler roll.

121. What third party? They have all but been outlawed by the hegemony of the big two.
Our friends in Vermont vote for the independant Bernie Sanders, even though he has had Democratic challengers over the years. Perhaps he and his voters don't put anything else before themselves either in your opinion? In his last congressional campaign, in 2004, Sanders took 69 percent to Republican Greg Parke's 24 percent and Democrat Larry Drown's 7 percent.

And last I checked Dennis Kucinich is a Democrat. In fact he's run for office many many times as a Democrat, and he wasn't a Republican in his youth.

No, if Hillary wins the nomination I will be a consciencious objector. In that case I won't promote another candidate on DU, but I will write in Kucinich on my ballot.

But i won't vote for Hillary.

You can, and you can feel very selfless and holy if you want.

124. I'm glad Dennis saw the light. Of course there are other Dems who haven't, but
that hasn't stopped Schumer or Rahm from promoting their primary candidacies, just as former membership in the Repo party isn't a bar to Schumer or Rahm from promoting switch hitters' primary candidacies either.

But hey, if we all agreed on everything who would we argue with?

I'll always be grateful for the time you agreed with me that misogynistic attacks on the twins for their alleged excesses in Argentina were over the top. i was being torn a new oriface, at the time as I recall.

While I'm not particularly a fan of the twins, they aren't to blame for being born, after all, and attacking the offspring of my political enemies isn't really my style. At least not until and if they enter the frey in their own right, and then I far prefer to attack them for their ideas and political actions instead of for peripheral bullshit.

77. You may have poor judgement in quality music but this is a great post
We've got about 50-100 abhorantly anti-hillary posters here that gang up on any range against Hillary.

I could create a sock puppet and start a thread "There is no way I'll vote for Hillary if she gets the nomination because Hillary boils small children for lunch" and I can assure you it'll be on the greatest page within 3 hours.

If I were DU admin I would start a forum specifically for candidate bashing and then set it up that absolutely none of those threads gets on the greatest page. Then for those of us who want to debate the issues and not flamefest candidates - we can post safely in GD/GDP with the best of the threads making the home page

I don't care if Hillary left a tip, or if she cackles when some Faux Nooze dipshit asks her a stupid question. I don't give a rat's ass if Obama wears a lapel pin or puts his hand over his heart. I don't give a flying fuck at a rolling donut hole about the price of Edwards' haircuts or the size of his house: he can wear a wig made of Princess Di's pubic hair and live in the frickin' Taj Mahal for all I care. I don't care that Kucinich's wife is a foot taller than him and has a tongue stud (!), or even that he saw a UFO. Politicians are people and people do all kinds of weird human shit, and that's just fine with me. I care about their ideas, I care about their ability to lead the country and run the government, I care about what they're going to do about Iraq and the looming fiscal crisis (advice to investors: sell!) and global warming and healthcare and national security. I don't give a shit about the rest of it, and I don't understand why half of DU seems to think this picky little bullshit matters. If someone could offer up a rational explanation, I'd appreciate it.

Rant off. Thanks for listening.

101. I always wished there was an UN-RECOMMEND button.
That way, when you saw a thread with a subject line of

Subject: Blatant Generic Falsehood Being Perpetuated For Purely Partisan, Trollish, Inciting or Disruptive Purposes

you could counter the bullshit brigade by removing a vote. And if enough people concurred, the thing wouldn't end up on the list at all.

I would imagine that's probably too hard for the software to handle, but I think it would obviate a lot of hurt feelings (maybe create a few, too). But that way, if it ended up on the 'Greatest Page' then it would be pretty much a consensus item.
