Thompson proposes reducing future retiree SS benefits
Thompson: Reduce future retiree benefits

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent Sat Nov 10, 1:54 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson on Friday proposed reducing benefits promised to future retirees and establishing a system of voluntary personal retirement accounts under Social Security to help shore up the program's finances.

"If somebody's got a better idea let them put it on the table," said the former Tennessee senator in a challenge to fellow Republicans as well as Democrats vying for the White House in 2008.

15. I disagree with that, too. Social Sec. payments aren't gifts from the govt....

it's your own money you are getting back that the government took from you in trust.

Although...your benefits ARE cut if you earn income from something else, so maybe it's not so different to say that you don't get them at all, if you have assets.

But I don't know....I don't like the idea of not getting your own money back that the govt took on a promise to pay you back in your retirement years. It's not a gift or entitlement program - at least not that part of it.

2. How about if someone has an original idea they put it on the table?
That idea's already been on the table and been shot down.

6. I've got a better idea!
End the exorbitant pensions and other life-long benefits for politicians and let them live on SS like everyone else when they retire. You'll see an immediate improvement to the system.

7. This guy's an idiot. Who in the hell wanted him to run?
Maybe they were checking out the young wife instead of the old looney.

9. In answer to the question "Who wanted him to run"
A good many, in my opinion, were Law and Order fanatics, who can't seem to discern the difference between Thompson and the character he plays on TV. The same people who attack soap-opera stars on the street for being the bastards they are on their shows.

:nopity:

10. Uncle Fred is being honest --Most honest of any GOP
Candidate. The others pretend they will protect SS.

GOP have hated anything that represents FDR and LBJ.
Philosphically it is abomination to provide all these
social programs.

I respect Thompson=s unabashed honesty.

People conveniently forget that when FDR was in power, the
GOP hated him so much they could not utter his name. "That
man in the White House" was the best they could do.
