Time's Swampland Ana Marie Cox: Journalists agree Obama's speech is "really good." Excerpt below.
“When I’m your nominee, my opponent won’t be able to say that I supported this war in Iraq; or that I gave George Bush the benefit of the doubt on Iran; or that I support that Bush-Cheney diplomacy of not talking to leaders we don’t like. And he won’t be able to say that I wavered on something as fundamental as whether it’s ok for America to use torture – because it’s never ok. That’s why I’m in it.” ...

“This party – of Jefferson and Jackson; of Roosevelt and Kennedy – has made the most difference in people’s lives when we’ve led, not by polls, but by principle; not by calculation, but by conviction; when we’ve had leaders who could summon the entire nation to a common purpose – a higher purpose. And I am running for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States because that’s the party America needs us to be right now. “ ...

“I don’t want to pit Blue America against Red America, I want to lead the United States of America.” ...

“I’m running because of what Dr. King called “the fierce urgency of now.” I’m running because I believe there’s such a thing as being too late. And that hour is almost upon us.

I run for the presidency for the same reason I fought to bring jobs to the jobless and hope to the hopeless on the streets of Chicago; for the same reason I stood up for justice and equality as a civil rights lawyer; for the same reason I’ve fought for Illinois families for over a decade.

Because I will never forget that the only reason I’m standing here today is because someone, somewhere stood up when it was risky. Stood up when it was hard. Stood up when it wasn’t popular. And because that someone stood up, a few more stood up. And then a few thousand. And then a few million. And together, standing up, with courage and clear purpose, they somehow managed to change the world.

That’s why I run, Iowa – to give my children and yours the same chances someone gave me.

That’s why I run, Democrats – to keep the promise of America alive for those who still hunger for opportunity and thirst for equality.

That’s why I’m asking you to stand with me, to caucus for me, to stop settling for what the cynics tell us we must accept. In this election – at this moment – let us reach for what we know is possible. A nation healed. A world repaired. An America that believes again.”

But I don't think it was just the sugar high that made several journalists turn to each other and widen their eyes: "It's really good," one said. "Really."

He's up last.

26. You're quite wrong, you know.
The problem with O isn't his bio or his credientials. It's his ideas.

His biggest and worst idea is that the divide in this country is all just a big misunderstanding. That's an empty idea, and and very bad one - bad because it echos the RNC Lite media cry of "Can't we all just get along?"

33. No, it's a powerful idea that scares the pants off of some
who have worked to divide us against each other for their own profit. Principled conservatives and liberals have a lot more common ground than people think.

You are attacking on his strength, ideas. Your method is familiar. This is what the right did to Kerry.

34. How is it POSSIBLE that you do not UNDERSTAND after all the election fraud,
all the looting and theft and lawlessness and illegal wars and torture and subverted federal agencies and more travesties against the people and our constitution and the entire world than anyone could list in a week - that the Republican REGIME is a giant poison lump - a twisted, glowing slag heap of depleted uranium?

Compromise with these ROACHES is impossible. They intend to steal our money, sell our jobs, poison our food, and generally smash our lives. My candidate understands this and is willing to say so. Yours is not.

You're being an asshole.

1. Republican people in our community are not the regime, and nobody is a cockroach. This isn't the Hutus against the Tutsis.

2. I like John Edwards too. A lot.

3. Obama is not talking about compromising with the Republican regime, he is rebuilding our community around our strengths.

4. I'm putting you on ignore, because you are an ass.

Aloha.

6. Not to get twitchy, but that's what a lot of people were calling JFK.
LBJ was the one who said it most vociferously.

JFK was white, IIRC, and with regard to his qualifications, he had slightly more time on the Hill than Obama, as well as a military background during the war.

13. That was almost 50 years ago
Standards were very different then and some DID consider JFK an empty suit. But today, someone with JFK's experience and background would never be called such a thing.

24. Well, yes, they would.
John Edwards got that insult from, among others, a black blogger, Wonkette, and The Hill:

http://wakeupblackamerica.blogspot.com/2006/12/another-empty-suit-enters-race.html
http://gitell.wordpress.com/2007/02/21/wonkette-jumps-the-shark-john-edwards-empty-suit/
http://pundits.thehill.com/2007/07/16/edwards-anti-poverty-campaign-as-empty-as-his-suit/
http://www.federalistjournal.com/fedblog/?p=2885

I don't necessarily endorse the content of these links, I provide them simply to point out that your assertion is untrue. Edwards, also, is white, and these comments were published much more recently than fifty years ago.

Here are a few more "empty suits" in the news recently:

Fred Thompson, white guy AND empty suit (per CBS)Mit: http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2007/10/23/politics/horserace/entry3396540.shtml
Thompson has been criticized in some quarters for being something of an empty suit.

Mittsy Shittsy Romney, white guy AND empty suit: http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/news_press_release,207044.shtml
"Empty Suit" Romney Embraces Castro Rhetoric. Romney triggered outrage in Miami by quoting Cuban dictator Fidel Castro's traditional sign-off line "patria o muerte, venceremos" -- a "Communist rallying cry" which means "Fatherland or death, we shall overcome." The incident and Romney's woeful explanation of it prompted one local activist to call him an "empty suit," while others criticized his lack of prepa ration on Cuban issues.

I could go on. 'Berto Gonzales, half of Bush's appointees...it's a phrase that is commonly used for lotsa flash and not much substance. It's an opinion, applied to people REGARDLESS of their skin color, not a racial epithet.

The point is, you're wrong. Stop playing the race card. It's unbecoming.

29. Is John Edwards a dunce, too, or is he black and I just didn't notice?
How about Mittsy Romney, asswipe GOP governor and businessman, and Fred Thompson, who, like him or not, has a government career going back to Watergate?

I posted their 'empty suit' quotes upthread.

Here's one for Berto, so the Hispanics don't feel left out: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/benchconference/2007/03/gonzopart_iiiheckuva_job_alber.html

He may be a idiot asshole, but he went to Harvard, too!

This is bullshit, this accusation that ONLY the poor black guy is getting that remark. It doesn't reflect on him though, it reflects on those who are playing this nitwittish race card accusation on his 'behalf'--as if they're 'helping' him. I got news for you--that kind of crap is UNHELPFUL in the extreme.

And what makes you think I'm "white people" anyway?

Jefferson Jackson Dinner: Edwards

Posted by Ana Marie Cox

Before the speeches started, two of Edwards' senior staffers were touring the press filing center. Someone asked for a speech preview. One of the staffers rolled his eyes: "The expectations are so high for him..."

I wondered if that was something he actually thought or something he wanted us to think he thought. Having seen Edwards' speech, I think it was the latter -- someone who was really trying to rise above high expectations wouldn't have given the safe, cut-and-paste stump speech that Edwards just did. He recycled anecdotes that, however powerful, must surely be as familiar to politically involved Iowans as they are to reporters: The James Lowe one, the "Elizabeth and I decided sitting in a hospital room, after a day of tests" one, and the swimming pool suit one. Also, he hates lobbyists -- and his many pointed references to lobbyists and how he didn't take money from them were his only jabs at Hillary for the night. But I doubt anyone missed significance of this one: "In the 1990s, Democrats controlled the White House, the Senate and the Congress but lobbyists killed universal health care in the United States of America."
