Chevy Chase to return to SNL as a 'senior political correspondent'

Weekend Update: Chevy Chase on the Campaign Trail

By Andrew C. Revkin

Presidential hopefuls may do well to duck and cover. Chevy Chase is gunning for them.

In an appearance over the weekend with his wife, Jayni, at an environmental fair in New York’s Hudson Valley, Mr. Chase — between mentions of composting and climate change — talked enthusiastically about his return to “Saturday Night Live” in occasional stints as a “senior political correspondent” for the mock news show Weekend Update.

The 64-year-old comedian said one issue he’ll be tracking closely is the candidates’ positions on global warming and energy conservation.

He and his wife are co-founders of the Center for Environmental Education, a Web-centered group working to provide environmental lesson plans, energy-saving guides and other information to schools seeking to cut their environmental impact and energy use.

(Ms. Chase is the author of a 1996 book, “Blueprint for a Green School.” Most of the contents are now on the group’s Web site.)

In their joint talk, Mr. Chase played “the stooge,” as he described his role, riffing on his wife’s straight-person presentation on saving the planet.

The biggest laughs came when Mr. Chase talked about returning to his role as newsman.

“I found out — even when I was half the age I am now — that I can really affect the political landscape, like when I helped get Gerry Ford to stand up,” he said. “He was a very sweet man, by the way. And now we’ve got a guy with the sense of humor of a bundt cake.”

1. Has SNL lampooned any Republican candidates yet?
Every time I watch, they seem to be skewering Hillary or Kucinich - but I haven't seen them doing the Republican lineup AT ALL.

2. They hit Fred pretty good about a month ago...
"How bad do I want to be President? On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm about a six." But let's face it, they are GE, how hard are they ever gonna be on the pugs?

3. Olberman is GE too.
I'm just sayin'...

BTW, Chevy Chase is a member of a very exclusive club, people who have been BANNED from appearing on SNL.

Chevy Chase was banned from hosting the show again after the February 15, 1997 episode due to his verbal abuse of the cast and crew during the week. Chase became notorious for his treatment of certain cast members when hosting past episodes, particularly his remarks to openly gay cast member Terry Sweeney.

Note: In 1985, Chase suggested that a perfect skit for Sweeney would be one in which he plays an AIDS victim who gets weighed every week. Chase's abusive behavior during the 1985 episode and other episodes are detailed in the Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live book.
