13. ohhhhhh. sheesh. didn't catch that at first.
i was catching that the cover associates Edwards with "sexy women" -- virile imagery.

18. i've been an art director for national pubs -- designing covers, and...
it's your job to look at all the "subtexts." all art directors do a little somethin', somethin' for their own kicks, but this is so blatant... makes me wonder if the subtext wasn't blessed by editor.

I recall a book from the 70s about body language that said if a man wants to appear sexually potent, he should stand with hand on hip pointing slightly at his crotch.

23. Only like a national magazine can.........
without anyone saying a damn thing!

I'm surprised that John Edwards didn't "denounce" Esquire publishers for this tactic used by his likeness! But maybe Edwards has the ability to take away insurance coverage from Congress, but not the ability to control the headlines on the cover of a magazine!

On 2nd thought, maybe Esquire were just echoing what John Edwards says about his own electibility.... ;)

Like he wants to CONTROL everything (just the ways the Thugs like to portray him). I admire him greatly and I don't think this picture serves him well at all.

12. Oh, yeah, it's so hard for white men in this world
The question probably should be "will we ever elect anyone other than a white man?"

Nothing at all about Edwards' progressive politics, just a silly one-off line intended to sell magazines.

There is a blonde in her underwear over his left shoulder, but I'm not sure what's subliminal about that. Pretty liminal, actually: "Pictures of sexy gals inside for those of you too repressed to choke one off to actual porn, but not too repressed to abstain from flogging it entirely."

But four months being "old" must be the winner thus far.

I know that three years is really, really....like moldy old, according to another Edwards supporter in another thread.

Exactly what is current to Edwards supporters? I know that in Edwards land, tomorrow begins today, but does the day before today lose all relevance whatsoever?

39. Ok heres a breakdown...
Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 06:36 PM by Mother Of Four
For the record I LOVE body language and challenges like this. :)

Head back, eyes open, distance looking = Looking to the future and/or looking ahead

Pictures been narrowed, Edwards isn't that thin. Thats something on the Artists, narrower shoulders mean less strong to most men and women.

Mona Lisa smile - Means he's supposed to have a sense of humor, even when serious. (Not really Edwards either from what I've seen...)
Shoulders back, over postured spine. "I'm Strong...and ready to go"

Shirt loose, appearing un-tailored. Cuffed, Blue color/Blue tie...not knotted "Perfectly" = I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. And "I'm one of you"

Hands at waist, those are the most interesting. Yes, It's called Posing...It means "Look at my maleness, I am man..Sexual, Viral..." Also that same hands on hips increases the viewable size of the mans body. Making him appear larger than he really is body wise. More able to "protect and provide" (Countered by the narrowing of the picture.)

Pleated pants, Loose and easily moved in. Another quiet "I'm not a stuffed shirt, I need the room to be able to move and do some work"

Manicured Fingers, "I may be a working man, but I care about how I look to you" Hands say alot about a person, also if you look. You'll see his fingers are spread at the waist. He's really not comfortable with this pose.

Text Sublimities-
Sexiest woman alive, up top and over his right shoulder. In Lingerie, posing in a "come and get me" manner.
"What it feels like" Just under it - (What does it feel like with Edwards?) Smarmy, but effective.
Then followed by "Extreme experience" just under it. The right shoulder gives a visceral response of where a man will "carry" you. It's left to him, but on your right as you look at the picture.

In front of his Chest...If So, John Edwards (smaller text) Of History ...those words are boldface. Makes you think he'll make
history.

Goes to China - All Bold. Making you think of the Trade agreement, the poison in toys, and how he's against all of it.

Has Fun - right at the belt line. Another play on Virility.

All in all, very staged...and if you love modern artwork (I do) you can see that he's not comfortable at all with the pose. Thats why it hasn't gotten, IMHO, the reaction that was intended.
