Check out the Dems in Congress today!!

Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee and my woman Maxine Waters are now onboard with this.

The bill requires that President Bush initiate troop withdrawals within 30 days of its passage with the goal of bringing home most soldiers and Marines by Dec. 15, 2008.

The White House said Bush would veto the bill if it comes to him. Presidential spokeswoman Dana Perino called the legislation the "height of irresponsibility," charging Democrats with merely trying to "appease radical groups" such as MoveOn.org and Code Pink.

(snip)

"Once again, the Democratic leadership is starting this debate with a flawed strategy, including a withdrawal date for Iraq, despite the gains our military has made over the past year, despite having dozens of similar votes in the past that have failed, and despite their pledge to support the troops," she said. "Democrats believe that these votes will somehow punish the president, but it actually punishes the troops."

(snip)

It is expected that if the measure fails in the Senate, Democrats will not consider Bush's war spending request until next year.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday that if it does pass and Bush rejects the bill, "then the president won't get his $50 billion."

Edit: Don't get your hopes up, of course. It either won't pass in the Senate, or he'll veto it and find the money elsewhere (and Democrats will take a lot of criticism). Even if it did, the December date is only a "goal," but it's clear that the funding would be for a "transition" out.

2. Democrats sure get bashed around here...
... so it's nice to cheer when they take a stand, isn't it?

And yes, getting these three Californians saying "yes" is shows strong party unity and the direction most of us here want to see.

3. I don't see how it passes the Senate, if 60 votes are required--
and if only 51 votes are required, it's still not a sure thing. Lieberman is a lost cause, and his asshole partners in crime Ben Nelson and Mark Pryor may jump ship, and Smith and Hagel may not cross over to vote for it. Those 5 guys will determine the outcome, if only a majority is needed.

4. It might not.
It won't become law in any case, but it does take the fight to the Republicans.

7. Update: It passed the House
House defies Bush and approves Iraq troop withdrawal

By Richard Cowan Thu Nov 15, 6:25 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Democratic-led House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq, defying President George W. Bush by tying the measure to $50 billion in new war funds.

By a vote of 218-203, the House sent the controversial plan to the Senate, where it faced an uphill fight as Republicans have vowed to block it.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino called on Congress to send Bush a "clean" emergency funding bill, without withdrawal dates.

11. They're doing what they CAN do.
They're taking a stand. And they're going to get Hell for it from the GOP.

What else would you have them do, considering they HAVE to form consensus to get anything passed? (This involved compromises for both liberal reps and moderate ones in order to get the votes it has.)
