Poll question: Is the Obama campaign behind the new push polls?
Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 03:40 PM by Lirwin2
For those who don't know, a new push poll is out, asking:

Why do you think Hillary Clinton is a weak candidate? A) Is a weak general election candidate. B)Is too dependent on lobbyist money. C) Won't bring change.

Then it asks:

Why do do think John Edwards is a weak candidate? A) a weak general election candidate because his positions are too liberal B) He should be home with his wife who has cancer.

11. Maybe we should vote on it being a push poll first :)

There seems to be a lot of discussion on it actually being a push poll.

looking at the type of questions asked, it's not Obama.

14. Not at all unexpected that 'this' poster would post a poll to make Obama look bad.
Unfortunately, this won't be the last time we see something so stupid.

15. Could also be a Republican pollster.
They may have included Edwards just to appear more "balanced".

23. More from Ben Smith on the The 'Ugly' Iowa Calls. Perhaps done to divide Dems.

The 'Ugly' Iowa calls

Mark Blumenthal makes a convincing case that those Iowa calls that I've been obsessing about really aren't "message-testing" at all, but really old-fashioned push polling, a genuine dirty trick.

These oddly constructed questions look mostly to me like a clumsy attempt to dress up as a "poll" the beyond-the-pale reference to Elizabeth Edwards' illness.

At very least, I find it utterly inconceivable that Harrison Hickman or the Edwards campaign had any connection to a five-question survey of this sort, and extremely implausible that it was part of any real poll conducted by anyone else.

So who would be doing this?

The bottom line is that I have no idea who is behind it, but we ought to consider another scenario as at least as plausible as the notion that this came from one of the Democratic campaigns. It is also possible that this was the work of some independent group with Republican ties that sees some value in gathering crude information about the Democratic race while fomenting ill-will and infighting in the Democratic ranks. If that was the goal, you need only read the comments under the posts of the blogger/respondents I linked to above to evidence of just that happening.

After talking to Blumenthal today, I went back to one of the respondents, "desmoinesdem," to ask her about some of these details: Was she asked about whether she plans to vote, or about her age or party affiliation. She wasn't.

Which is to say that my initial instinct -- that, as often with standard message testing, people who received the call misunderstood it's aim -- was probably wrong; and the outraged bloggers were more or less right.

16. Why not Dodd, Biden, Kucinich, Richardson?
Seems like it would be pretty stupid for Obama to do it. But, if one of the other candidates did it, "stupid" people might think Obama did it. So, you could attack Hillary and Edwards, and have everyone that's not so bright blame Obama.

Who says that this is happening. These things are usually done at the last minute to avoid a backlash.

18. It's probably Hillary doing the push poll so she can cry about the boys picking on her again. If you
would plant a softball questioner in the audience why wouldn't you also plant a push poller?

I've only heard about two or three Edwards supporters having been called. Have there been reports of recipients who are not supporting Edwards?

24. No, I don't think so
I don't really want to speculate on who's doing it, but if I had to guess I would say it's some PAC possibly. I think it's disgusting.

Or really Clinton or Edwards could just be extra conniving today and do dirty polling on themselves. These days I don't put much past politicians.

I'll be disappointed in whomever is doing this, if it's any of the candidates or with the candidates knowledge.
