Obama Knee-Caps an old Lady, and other Iowa Tales
http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_stump/archive/2007/11/20/obama-knee-caps-an-old-lady-and-other-iowa-tales.aspx

I see that this video of Obama engaging a voter on terrorism and immigration is getting some play around the web. The title of the YouTube clip--"Obama yells at elderly Iowa voter"--tells you all you need to know about the context in which it's been circulating. (According to this site, Drudge linked to it earlier today, though I can't find it now.) Having attended the event in question yesterday, I can tell you that the video has been framed and edited in such a way as to misrepresent what actually happened. The woman in question was a Republican named Jane Svoboda, who asked her questions in a pretty sharp and mean-spirited way. Obama began to answer them in a perfectly calm tone. The woman proceeded to interrupt and hector him several times over the course of the response. Each time she did, he would grow more animated--not nasty by any stretch, just the way someone gets when they care quite a bit about an issue. It's true that at times he almost had to yell, but that was only to make himself heard above the cheering of the crowd, which was very much sympathetic to what he was saying and unsympathetic to the woman, who'd outed herself as a bit of a bully.

All of which is to say, "Obama yells at elderly Iowa voter" is almost completely backward as a description of what happened.

1. Welcome to the world of Republican hard-ball, Obama.
If he can't handle this, there's no way he could win the general election. The Republicans are going to be nominating their weakest candidate since Dole - the only chance they'll have of winning is completely and utterly destroying the Democratic nominee through events like this.

5. He handled it just fine. If Hillary fans would stop lying about him,
he'd do even better.

6. If Obama can't handle answering 3 simple questions from an old lady..
How is he going to handle a takeover of the most bankrupt, confused and complicated administration in US history?

11. if elected, will your candidate prosecute the perpetrators of
the most bankrupt, confused and complicated administration in US history?
Or will she give them a pass?

This is a genuine question because I don't think any of the candidates have been asked this. I'm curious if you have any insight into her position on seeking prosecution of the current criminal cabal after they leave office.

12. What are you even talking about? He hadled it perfectly fine.
Do you prefer that our candidates tailor all their responses to hostile questions in a corporate-media-friendly manner? It's Republican hard-ball, after all, so they'd better play by Republican rules, and be wary of the Republican framing, right?

Oh my, what will Frank Lutz say!

15. I think we learned with Kerry in 2004
that it's not enough to handle something, or think it was no big deal. It's not fair, but the Democratic candidate is held to a much higher standard than the Republican one. For the record, I'm not a Clinton supporter either.

8. Thanks for this. It was quite clear the video was edited and the "yelling" was
sort of over-hyped as well.
It would be good if candidates supporters wouldn't use such biased, obviously RW spin - NO MATTER WHO IS THE OBJECT (I am not in any camp myself).
There are enough substance issue difference to be debated to need to buy these retard propaganda bits.

10. It was mainly Clintonistas trying to push
that angle.

They failed pretty miserably.

14. The Clinton didn't screw up...
It was Obama's screw up. If he can't answer 3 questions from a little ole lady, how can we expect him to answer questions succinctly and intelligently with adversarial world leaders and/or our friends and allies.

18. No doubt. The right is doing...
what the right does best. As in '04, they're attempting to knee-cap the real progressive candidate, probably with the corporate MSM's help and the DLC's blessing.

19. I'm done even criticizing Obama. It's pointless to feed the Repuke machine
and just cause discord. It will just make any Democrat who wins look nasty. Let the Dems fight it out on the trail and let us remember we are being turned into a live wrestling match with a really fucked up media that wants to control our elections.
