Obama gave "The Advocate" 15 whole minutes for an interview
Just weeks after Clinton graced the cover of The Advocate’s 40th anniversary issue, the newsmagazine did an interview with Democratic rival Barack Obama. But rather than the cover, Obama landed only on the newsmagazine’s Web site. The interview’s still there—below a review of Britney Spears’ latest album. Was it a snub? Advocate News Editor Kerry Eleveld says no.

The magazine asked for an interview months ago, but Obama said yes only after the controversy erupted over the inclusion of anti-gay singer Donnie McClurkin in the campaign’s gospel concert tour in South Carolina. The interview took place by phone and was limited, by the campaign, to 15 minutes, said Eleveld. There wasn’t time to go beyond the immediate controversy and the magazine felt it was important to get the interview out to readers as quickly as possible. So, it was posted on the Web site Oct. 30. And, she added, the magazine’s print version does not carry an interview that has run online.

3. Oh, gee.....must be another example of bad staff work.
Yeah, that's it. :eyes:

The Advocate cover story on Senator Clinton was after the Presidential Forum in Los Angeles, from what I understand. She gave an interview...I daresay it was much longer than 15 minutes...about her positions on GLBT issues. While I'm not exactly wild about her stance on same-sex marriage (which Obama also shares), at least she gave the time to give an interview to the largest circulation magazine for the GLBT community. It wasn't some damned afterthought.

I started out liking Obama - he said all the right things. The problem is his actions don't match his rhetoric. Unless he wants to act on all these pro-gay beliefs he claims he has I will never trust him.

As far his campaign snubbing them, considering that they put Clinton on their 40th Anniversary edition, probably not an unbiased publication.

It's up to the candidates to make time for interviews.
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 02:30 PM by terrya
As was mentioned, the Advocate asked for an interview with Senator Obama months earlier. And, he only responded after the McClurkin fiasco. Hell, the guy supposedly has this great stance towards the GLBT community and their issues. It wasn't like the Advocate was demanding a huge chunk of Senator Obama's time. He had to have known that the Advocate is a magazine devoted to the GLBT community.

This was nothing more than a feeble attempt at damage control.

21. Should anyone be surprised by this?
Obama made it clear how he feels: He gave McClurkin the stage to spew hate. He figured that 15 minutes would be enough time to spend doing a bit of spin via The Advocate. Obama's more concerned with garnering the support of the religious conservatives. Not the GLBT community.

33. It gets even worse
He lied about the concert in the interview.

The Advocate: How did this happen? Was Mr. McClurkin vetted?
Senator Obama: Obviously, not vetted to the extent that people were aware of his attitudes with respect to gay and lesbians, LGBT issues -- at least not vetted as well as I would have liked to see.

Having said that, we viewed this simply as an opportunity to have a gospel concert as part of our overall outreach, and since he was singing at a concert along with a number of other artists, as opposed to being a spokesperson for us, probably it didn’t undergo the same kind of vet that someone who was serving as a surrogate for me might have.

end of quote

Simply put this is a bald faced lie. The man spoke. At least admit what he did.

7.4 out of 10 don't want Hillary

That's a disingenuous phrase for any candidate.
